GATE 2027: Apply from August 27; no age or attempt limit

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) today, 27 September 2026, released the thorough eligibility criteria for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The details, published on the official website gate2027.iitm.ac.in, clarify who can apply for the national-level examination, which acts as a gateway for M.Tech and research admissions at premier institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc, and GFTIs, along with for recruitment in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

The criteria confirm that candidates pursuing or having completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in many disciplines are eligible. Notably, there are no restrictions on age or the number of attempts for GATE 2027, providing flexibility for a diverse pool of aspirants across India and internationally.

GATE 2027 Eligibility: No Age or Attempt Limits

IIT Madras has confirmed that there will be no age limit for candidates appearing for GATE 2027. This policy allows individuals of any age to apply, whether they are recent graduates or those with significant work experience looking to pursue higher education or career opportunities. Similarly, there is no restriction on the number of times a candidate can attempt the GATE examination, enabling aspirants to re-appear if they wish to improve their scores or explore different career paths.

The eligibility framework extends to a broad range of academic backgrounds, including engineering, technology, science, commerce, architecture, arts, and humanities. This inclusive approach aims to attract candidates from various fields who aspire to advanced studies or roles in PSUs. The GATE score, once obtained, remains valid for a period of three years, offering candidates a window to utilise their results for admissions or job applications.

Educational Qualifications for Indian and International Candidates

For Indian nationals, the educational qualification mandates passing graduation in Engineering/Technology/Science/Arts/Humanities or holding a Master’s degree in any relevant discipline. Candidates currently in their 3rd year or higher of any undergraduate degree program are also eligible to apply. This includes students pursuing three-year programs such as BSc, BCom, and BA, who can apply in their 3rd year or after completion for master’s programs at IITs and IISc.

International candidates must be currently in their 3rd year or higher studies, or have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration. For those from universities outside India, a bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology (at least 4 years) or a master’s in a related science subject (at least 2 years) is required. There is no minimum percentage or CGPA required in the qualifying degree to appear for GATE 2027.

Application Process and Exam Structure

The application process for GATE 2027 is conducted online through the GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System) portal. Registration for GATE 2027 opened on 2 September 2026. Indian nationals are required to register through a verified DigiLocker account. Required documents for application include degree certificates for graduates or a Provisional Certificate Letter for those currently studying. Candidates with a disability or from SC/ST categories need to upload relevant certificates to avail fee discounts.

The GATE exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) with a duration of 3 hours. It consists of 65 questions for a maximum of 100 marks. The question types include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). Negative marking applies only to MCQs. A good GATE score supports M.Tech admissions through COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) for IITs and CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech) for NITs, IIITs, and other colleges.
