IISER UG Admission Changes: Olympiads, Sports, AI-Integration

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) are planning to introduce alternative pathways for admission to their undergraduate programmes, including direct entry based on performance in international Science Olympiads and sports achievements. These significant reforms, along with plans for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and research and establishing Centres of Excellence, were discussed by the Standing Committee of IISERs in January 2026, with the minutes published online in July 2026.

These proposed changes aim to diversify the talent pool entering IISERs, strengthen their research and innovation ecosystem, and align PhD programmes with national missions. The reforms are expected to be implemented across all IISERs within the next 12 months, marking a pivotal shift in admissions and academic strategy.

IISER Admissions 2027: New Pathways and Transparency

The proposal for admissions through international Olympiads and sports achievements was specifically put forth by the IISER Pune director during the Standing Committee meeting in January. Currently, admissions to IISERs are primarily conducted through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). The committee has recommended that any new admission pathways be routed through the existing, centralised IAT counselling process to ensure transparency and fairness, a critical aspect highlighted by the Standing Committee of IISERs.

This move mirrors similar initiatives by other premier institutions. IIT Madras already admits Olympiad, sports, and fine arts achievers through its SCOPE, SEA, and FACE pathways. Also, IIT Kanpur recently offered direct entry to five international Olympiad medalists, and IIT Kharagpur will admit students through Science Olympiad Excellence Admission (SCOPE) and Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) starting with the 2026 academic session. These precedents show a growing trend among top Indian institutions to recognise diverse talents beyond traditional entrance examinations.

AI Integration and Research Enhancement at IISERs

Beyond admissions, the Standing Committee of IISERs discussed integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and research. The committee recommended that IISERs collaborate with the computer science departments of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to use their expertise in AI. It also suggested adopting the AI policy developed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru as a template for AI integration, with implementation expected over the next three to four months.

To further strengthen research and innovation, each IISER will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in a specific area. The committee also approved setting up Section 8 companies at IISERs, which are non-profit organisations promoting commerce, art, science, sports, education, research, social welfare, religion, charity, protection of environment, or any such other object. This initiative is designed to promote research and support the translation of academic innovations into tangible societal benefits.

NAAC Accreditation and PHD Programme Revamp

In a significant move towards quality assurance and standardisation, the Standing Committee has opted for National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation for all IISERs. This accreditation process will evaluate IISERs against national benchmarks, ensuring high academic standards and institutional quality across the board.

The committee also discussed revamping PhD programmes to align them with national missions. For instance, IISER Bhopal is currently inviting applications for its PhD admissions for the semester commencing from August 26. The institution has specific eligibility criteria for its PhD programmes, including an upper age limit and minimum marks in qualifying degrees, with relaxations for various categories.
