IIT Guwahati 28th Convocation: 2,265 Degrees Conferred; Saptarshi Mukherjee Bags President’s Gold Medal
The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) celebrated its 28th Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The prestigious technical institute awarded degrees to a massive batch of 2,265 graduating students across various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.
The event was attended by top academics, proud parents, and industry leaders. Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered an inspiring convocation address.

The Class of 2026 saw high graduation numbers across both technical and management streams. Out of the 2,265 degrees awarded, undergraduate courses comprised 982 students, postgraduate courses accounted for 871 students, and 412 scholars completed their PhD and Dual Degree programs.

The 28th Convocation celebrated academic excellence by honoring top-performing students with 4 coveted Gold Medals and 18 Institute Silver Medals.
Saptarshi Mukherjee, a student from the high-demand B.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program, received the prestigious President of India Gold Medal. He earned this top spot by securing the highest Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) across the entire undergraduate batch.

Key Institutional Achievements and Future Plans
During the ceremony, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, presented the institute’s annual report and shared key updates about campus growth. Over its 32-year history, IIT Guwahati has produced more than 26,790 high-caliber graduates.
Key Research Metric: In the past year alone, IIT Guwahati faculty and scholars published a remarkable 2,478 research papers, showcasing its strong focus on global innovation.
The Director also highlighted that IIT Guwahati is currently handling 290 active research and consultancy projects, which carry a total value of nearly Rs. 300 crore.
To stay aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the institute recently launched a cutting-edge M.Tech degree program in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. It has also updated its undergraduate curriculum to increase experiential learning and industry collaborations with prominent institutions in Japan and the United Kingdom.
Chief Guest Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman encouraged the new graduates to focus on national development, advising them to use their skills to build deep technological capabilities and solve real-world problems for society.
