Kerala Schools Closed Today, August 7, 2026: Heavy Rain Prompts Holidays in Eight Districts

Schools and colleges in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts are closed today, August 7, 2026, following holiday announcements by respective district administrations due to heavy rain. All CBSE, ICSE, and state-board affiliated schools in these affected districts will observe a holiday today.

The closures come as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for seven districts and orange alerts for five others, forecasting heavy to moderate rainfall and gusty winds. This marks a continuation of weather-related disruptions that have impacted educational institutions across Kerala over the past week, with student safety and ongoing waterlogging being primary concerns.

Kerala School Holidays Today, August 7, 2026: District-Wise Details

Today, August 7, 2026, educational institutions in eight Kerala districts are observing a holiday due to the persistent heavy rainfall. District administrations in Ernakulam and Thrissur made their holiday announcements this morning. Holidays had already been declared for educational institutions in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.

Specifically, in Pathanamthitta, District Collector A Nizamudeen ordered the closure of all educational institutions, ranging from Anganwadi centres to professional colleges, including tuition centres. Similarly, Alappuzha District Collector Shaji V Nair declared a holiday for all educational institutions. In Wayanad, District Collector D R Meghashree announced a holiday following an orange alert from the IMD, while Kottayam District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena declared a holiday for all educational institutions due to the prevailing severe weather conditions. Thrissur District Collector Shikha Surendran declared holidays for all educational institutions functioning as relief camps.

IMD Weather Alerts for Kerala, August 7, 2026

The IMD has issued red and orange weather alerts for multiple Kerala districts on August 7, 2026, warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds over the next three hours.

  • Red Alert: Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
    • Heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour.
    • Gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph at isolated places.
  • Orange Alert: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
    • Moderate rainfall between 5 mm and 15 mm per hour.
    • Gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph at isolated places.
  • Residents in the affected districts are advised to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Flood Situation and Ocean Warnings in Kerala

While floodwaters have begun receding in parts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts, flooding continues to be a concern in the Upper Kuttanad and Kuttanad regions of Alappuzha district. This ongoing waterlogging poses risks to residents and infrastructure, contributing to the decision to keep educational institutions closed for student safety.

Adding to the weather concerns, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a warning regarding the ‘Kallakkadal’ (swell wave) phenomenon. INCOIS forecasts waves between 1.1 metres and 1.5 metres, which could potentially trigger sea ingress along parts of the Kerala coast. This phenomenon could exacerbate coastal flooding and impact communities residing near the shoreline.

Scheduled Examinations and Previous Closures

Despite the widespread holidays for schools and colleges, previously scheduled public examinations and university exams will proceed as planned in most districts. Students are advised to confirm with their respective examination authorities for any specific changes, though general announcements indicate no postponements.

This is not the first instance of weather-related closures in Kerala this month. Several district administrations had previously declared holidays for schools and colleges on August 3, 2026, due to heavy rain. Districts affected on that date included Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kottayam, and Idukki. Alappuzha had also declared a partial holiday on August 3, specifically for educational institutions functioning as relief camps in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, highlighting the recurring nature of these weather challenges.
