Maharashtra medical colleges have reported a substantial increase in postgraduate (PG) medical course fees, with hikes of up to 485% for the 2026–27 academic year. This follows the colleges’ transition to private university status, a move approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet in August 2026.

The fee revisions primarily affect two institutions: NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Nagpur, and Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation’s Medical College, Ahilyanagar. These increases contribute to a broader trend of rising medical education costs observed across several states in 2026.
Fee Revisions at NKP Salve Institute
NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, operating under Lata Mangeshkar University, has implemented a significant fee increase. The estimated total cost for the MD Radiodiagnosis course has risen by 485%, from an earlier three-year fee of Rs 30.24 lakh, as determined by the Maharashtra Fee Regulating Authority (FRA), to approximately Rs 1.77 crore under the new structure. The annual tuition and development fees for MD Radiodiagnosis are now Rs 54.75 lakh.
The new fee structure at NKP Salve includes a 5% annual increase in tuition and development fees, an annual university fee of Rs 1.5 lakh, and a one-time refundable caution deposit of Rs 1 lakh. The total first-year fee for MD Radiodiagnosis is Rs 57.25 lakh. Also, the college has increased its annual MBBS fee to Rs 21.75 lakh, bringing the estimated total cost of the MBBS course to around Rs 1.12 crore. Postgraduate and super-speciality candidates are required to submit an undertaking and a refundable bond of Rs 5 lakh against a one-year service condition at admission.

Changes at Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Medical College
At Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation’s Medical College, Ahilyanagar, now associated with Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University, the annual tuition fee for several MD and MS specialities has risen to Rs 17.95 lakh for state-quota seats and Rs 35.9 lakh for All India Quota (AIQ) seats. This represents an increase of approximately 99% for state-quota seats and 299% for AIQ seats compared to the earlier annual fee of Rs 9 lakh. The fee notice from Vikhe Patil Medical College is dated October 21, 2026, and its structure was approved by the university’s ad hoc Fee Regulatory Committee.
For Pathology, the annual tuition fee at Vikhe Patil Medical College is Rs 15 lakh for both state and AIQ quotas. The college also lists a one-time university fee of Rs 1.5 lakh, an annual hostel fee of Rs 1.5 lakh, and a one-time refundable caution deposit of Rs 1 lakh. The three-year tuition cost under the new structure is Rs 53.85 lakh for state-quota seats and Rs 1.077 crore for AIQ seats. The overall course cost, including the one-time university fee but excluding hostel and caution deposit, is Rs 55.35 lakh for state-quota seats and Rs 1.092 crore for AIQ seats. State-quota seats are reserved for Maharashtra domicile students, and tuition fee scholarships or reimbursements from the state government will not apply to students admitted under these new provisions.
Broader Context of Fee Regulation in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra Cabinet approved the two colleges to become private universities in August 2026. The Fees Regulating Authority (FRA), Maharashtra, typically fixes the fees of unaided private professional colleges in the state. The FRA portal directs institutions to display course-wise approved fees on their notice boards and websites. The FRA list for 2026-27 shows 14 colleges with ‘Approved’ status and 6 colleges with ‘No Upward Revision’ status, with meeting dates in July 2025. The ‘No Upward Revision’ status indicates no fee increase for the 2026-27 academic year for those colleges.
The FRA list for 20 private medical colleges in Maharashtra for 2026-27 indicates an approved MD/MS fee range from Rs 9 lakh to Rs 18.3 lakh. However, this list does not cover hostel, mess, university, caution deposit, NRI Quota, institutional seats, or deemed university MD/MS seats. Maharashtra has over 68 PG medical colleges, offering 3576 government and 2498 private PG medical seats for MD, MS, and diploma courses. Admission to these colleges requires an MBBS degree and clearing entrance exams such as NEET PG, INI CET, and AIAPGET.
