MGU PG CAP 2026: Apply for affiliated college admissions now

Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has released its prospectus for admission to Post Graduate Degree Programmes (MGU-CSS) and B LiSc Ed in affiliated colleges for the 2026 academic year. The admissions will be conducted through the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP), which was introduced by the university in 2010 to speed up procedures and enhance transparency.

The 2026 prospectus supersedes all previous editions, which are no longer valid for the current admission cycle. The CAP system aims to address issues such as unfilled seats and a lack of guidance for applicants, thereby democratising the admission process for postgraduate programmes at MGU, located in Kottayam, Kerala.

Admission Process and Seat Allocation

The Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) covers a significant portion of seats across government and aided colleges, as well as unaided programmes. This includes all seats in government colleges, with the exception of those reserved under sports, cultural, or Persons with Disabilities (PD) quotas. In aided colleges, 50% of open quota seats are designated for aided/aided forward community candidates, while 40% are for aided backward community candidates. Additionally, 15% of seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates and 5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.

Community Merit Quota seats account for 10% in aided/aided forward community colleges and 20% in aided backward community colleges. Unaided colleges and unaided programmes within aided colleges have 50% of their total seats, including those reserved for SC/ST/SEBC, under the CAP. The remaining management quota seats in these institutions are filled directly by the colleges concerned. Candidates are advised to consult the current prospectus for detailed information regarding the admission process.

Reservation Policies and Special Categories

MGU implements a thorough reservation policy that includes provisions for International Students, Nominees, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), Transgender candidates, and Special Reservation categories like Sports Quota and Cultural Quota. An additional 10% of seats, over and above the sanctioned strength, are earmarked for foreign students for each undergraduate programme. International students, excluding those under Government of India sponsored schemes, must apply online via www.ucica.mgu.ac.in and pay an application fee of US$100.

Special provisions also include an additional seat in affiliated Arts and Science colleges for students sponsored by the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, and another for Malayalee students from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. For candidates with benchmark disability (minimum 40% disability), 5% of seats are created over and above the sanctioned strength in all affiliated institutions. Differently abled candidates require only a pass in the qualifying examination for admission to PG Programmes. Two additional seats are created for Transgender students in all courses in affiliated Arts & Science Colleges, requiring an identity card/certificate from the Social Justice Department. Similar provisions exist for Orphan Children (two seats), children from Government Children’s Homes (one additional seat), and five additional seats for children who lost both parents due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eligibility for Graphic Design and Sports Quota

For admission to Graphic Design programmes, candidates must possess a recognised Graphic Design examination qualification. Graduates who have passed their qualifying examination in the CBCSS (2009) pattern are eligible for certain other postgraduate programmes. The university also maintains a Sports Quota with an upper age limit of 25 years for applicants. Candidates applying under the Sports Quota can also apply through the general CAP if they wish to be considered for general allotment.

Points are awarded based on the level of representation and achievement in sports, with the highest points for winning a Gold Medal at approved World Championships/Olympics. For M.A., M.Sc., and M.Com programmes, one seat is reserved for every 20 seats under the sports quota. An additional seat is created after pooling for every 15 excess seats.

Mahatma Gandhi University, established on October 2, 1983, in Kottayam, Kerala, is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB). It is also accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). MGU offers a range of distance education programs through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), including B.A. Animation & Graphic Design.

The university has achieved notable rankings, including 37th among top higher education institutions in India and 67th in all categories by NIRF 2024 Rankings. Globally, MGU ranks among the top 500 universities by Times Higher Education (THE) Global Rankings 2026 and 4th in India in The Asia University Rankings 2026. MGU has received the Chancellor Prize as the Best University in Kerala three times (2016, 2018, and 2020) and was 81st globally among young universities less than 50 years old in The Young University Rankings 2024. The Union Ministry of Education’s Atal Ranking 2021 placed MGU at position three in innovation and entrepreneurship. Prof. C. T. Aravindakumar serves as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor.
