JEE Advanced 2027 exam pattern and marking scheme released by IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee, the designated conducting body for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2027, today, 9 October 2026, released the exam pattern and marking scheme for the upcoming examination. The announcement provides clarity for aspirants preparing for the highly competitive entrance test, which determines eligibility for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The JEE Advanced 2027 examination is scheduled for 17 May 2027, a Sunday, and will be conducted as a single-day, computer-based test. The pattern is largely expected to remain consistent with recent years, affecting the top 2,50,000 candidates who qualify from JEE Main 2027.

JEE Advanced 2027 Exam Structure and Key Dates

The JEE Advanced 2027 will comprise two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each of three hours duration. Candidates with PwD status will be allotted four hours per paper. Paper 1 is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by Paper 2 from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The examination will be offered in both English and Hindi, with candidates having the flexibility to switch between languages during the test.

The total number of questions is approximately 102, with 51 questions allocated to each paper. Each paper is divided into three subject-wise sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with 17 questions per subject. The total marks for JEE Advanced 2027 are expected to be around 360, with 180 marks assigned to each paper.

Question Types and Sectional Distribution

Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are structured into subject-wise sections, each containing 17 questions. The question types include single-correct Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), multi-correct MCQs, numerical-value questions, and occasionally match-the-list type questions. The distribution of these question types varies across sections within each paper.

For Paper 1, Section 1 consists of 4 single-correct MCQs per subject. Section 2 features 3 multi-correct MCQs per subject. Section 3 includes 6 numerical-value questions per subject, and Section 4 contains 4 match-the-list questions per subject. Paper 2 follows a similar structure, with Section 1 having 4 single-correct MCQs, Section 2 having 3 multi-correct MCQs, Section 3 having 6 numerical-value questions, and Section 4 having 4 paragraph/comprehension-based MCQs per subject.

Detailed Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

The JEE Advanced marking scheme is not fixed and typically varies slightly each year. For 2027, the indicative marking scheme shows specific positive and negative marks for different question types. Single-correct MCQs in both papers carry +3 marks for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer. Multi-correct MCQs award +4 marks for all correct options chosen, with partial marking ranging from +1 to +3 for selecting some correct options without any incorrect ones. However, marking any wrong option in multi-correct MCQs results in a -2 penalty.

Numerical value type questions in Paper 1 award +4 for a correct answer, with 0 or -1 for an incorrect answer. In contrast, numerical value type questions in Paper 2 have no negative marking, awarding +4 for a correct answer and 0 for an incorrect one. Match-the-list questions in Paper 1 and paragraph/comprehension-based MCQs in Paper 2 follow the +3 for correct and -1 for incorrect marking scheme. Unattempted questions in all sections receive 0 marks.
