The United Nations Secretariat has commenced the application process for its 2026 Young Professionals Programme (YPP), a global recruitment initiative aimed at attracting highly qualified individuals to careers as international civil servants. Applications opened on 16 October 2026 and will close on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 pm New York time.

The programme is designed to ensure equitable representation of all Member States within the UN Secretariat by recruiting talent from un- or under-represented countries. Successful candidates will undergo a competitive entrance examination and professional development, potentially leading to a two-year fixed-term contract at the P-1 or P-2 level.
Eligibility Criteria and Participating Countries
To be eligible for the 2026 YPP, candidates must meet specific criteria. Applicants must be 32 years old or younger by 31 December 2026, meaning they must have been born on or after 1 January 1994. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent degree requiring at least three years of study, in a field relevant to the examination area is required. Fluency in either English or French is also mandatory.
Crucially, candidates must be citizens of one of the 47 countries participating in the 2026 programme. The list of participating countries is published annually on the YPP home page of the UN Careers website and varies each year. For 2026, India is not on this list, meaning Indian nationals cannot apply based on Indian nationality alone. The Philippines is also not included in the 2026 list.
Application Process and Examination Details
The application process requires candidates to apply through the UN’s online recruitment system, Inspira. Applicants must attach a scan of their passport or government photo ID and proof of their degree. Work experience is not an eligibility requirement for the programme.
The 2026 examination area is Development and Sustainability. The selection process includes a written examination, typically conducted online in two stages, followed by an oral examination (video interview). Part I of the written exam is anticipated for February 2027, with Part II expected one to two months later. The oral exam is projected for mid-2027. Application screening is estimated to take place from December 2026 to January 2027.
Career Progression and First Postings
Successful candidates who pass the examination may be placed on a roster for consideration for suitable vacancies. While being placed on the roster does not guarantee a job offer, those who receive offers are initially given a two-year fixed-term contract at the P-1 or P-2 level. Subject to satisfactory performance after two years, a continuing contract may be granted.
Successful candidates must be willing to accept a position at any UN duty station worldwide. Potential first postings for YPP participants include locations such as Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Nairobi, New York, Santiago, or Vienna. The United Nations does not charge any application or recruitment fees for this programme.
