Chhattisgarh schools closed today due to heavy rain, flood-like situation

The Chhattisgarh government has declared a holiday for all government, private, and aided schools across the state today, September 26, 2026, due to heavy rainfall and a prevailing flood-like situation. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced the closure on Friday, emphasising that the safety of students is the top priority.

The decision impacts eight districts specifically: Dantewada, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Gariaband, Dhamtari, and Durg, where holidays were also observed on Friday. Heavy rainfall over the past two to three days has led to waterlogging, rising water levels in rivers and streams, and significant transportation difficulties, particularly affecting the Bastar division.

Impact on Education and Student Safety

The closure of schools on Saturday, September 26, 2026, follows similar declarations made on Friday in several districts. This measure aims to mitigate risks associated with the severe weather conditions, which include potential waterlogging and disruptions to transport routes. Chief Minister Sai stated, “safety of students is the top priority.”

On top of school closures, quarterly examinations that were scheduled in government schools within the affected areas have been postponed. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning predicting light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the state over the next three days, with very heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations across 13 districts, including Durg, in the coming hours.

Rainfall and Water Levels Across Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh has experienced continuous heavy rainfall, with the state recording an average of 1,082.4 mm rainfall between June 1 and September 25. This figure represents 100.1% of the state’s 10-year seasonal benchmark of 1,081.5 mm. Over the past 24 hours alone, the state received an average precipitation of 52.8 mm.

Reservoirs across the state are nearing or have reached full capacity. As of 8 AM, the Gangrel reservoir was at 98.14% of its capacity, while the Murumsilli reservoir had reached 100% capacity. Dudhawa reservoir stood at 97.21% and Sondhur at 88.18%. To manage the rising water levels, 10 gates were opened at Gangrel, releasing 54,950 cusecs of water, with 48,950 cusecs directed into the Mahanadi river and 6,000 cusecs into a canal via the Rudri barrage. Also, 14,650 cusecs of water have been released from four barrages in the Rajnandgaon region.

Relief Operations and Public Advisories

The Chhattisgarh government has directed district collectors to conduct relief and rescue operations with full vigilance. Officials are instructed to continuously monitor the situation, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers. Relief and rescue teams are on standby with necessary resources, and various departments, including district administrations, police, urban local bodies, and panchayats, are coordinating efforts.

Chief Minister Sai has urged citizens to prioritise their safety and that of their families, advising them to follow administrative guidelines. He stated, “There should be no delay in providing assistance to people in need in affected areas. Keeping the safety of citizens as the highest priority, the administration should remain prepared to deal with every situation.” People are advised against venturing unnecessarily into waterlogged areas, swollen rivers, or places with strong currents, and to avoid attempting to cross submerged bridges, culverts, or roads. In case of emergency, citizens can dial 112 for assistance.

Rain-Related Incidents and Fatalities

The heavy rainfall has led to tragic incidents across the state. In the early hours of Friday, a 40-year-old man died in a rain-related incident in Kondagaon district. Also, a woman reportedly lost her life after a mud house collapsed in the Kurandi area of Bastar district. These incidents show the severity of the weather conditions and the risks posed to residents.

The water level at Mahmara Anicut on the Shivnath River in the Rajnandgaon region also saw a significant rise, increasing from approximately over one foot at 8 AM on Friday to about two feet three inches by 11 AM, indicating the rapid escalation of water levels in various water bodies.
