CUET 2027 exam changes proposed: 'one student, one day' for 15 lakh candidates

CUET 2027 exam changes proposed: ‘one student, one day’ for 15 lakh candidates

In short

  • Around 15 lakh students are expected to appear for CUET 2027, with proposed changes aiming to reduce test fatigue and outstation travel expenses.
  • The CUET 2027 exam may transition to a 'one student, one day' format, where candidates take all selected tests on a single day, unlike the previous 2-3 day window.
  • Proposed structural reforms include reducing the duration per paper from 60 to 40-45 minutes and the number of questions from 50 to 35-40.
  • The maximum number of subjects a student can choose might be reduced from five to four, potentially impacting university admission requirements.
  • For CUET PG 2027, the exam may not be mandatory for courses where applications fall below available seat capacity, shifting to direct merit-based admissions for over 30 subjects.

The Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), and National Testing Agency (NTA) are in the process of finalising a roadmap for significant changes to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2027. These proposed reforms encompass both administrative and structural adjustments to the exam pattern, dates, and university eligibility criteria.

The objective behind these potential changes is to alleviate test fatigue for candidates, reduce outstation travel expenses and time, and simplify university eligibility criteria. Approximately 15 lakh students are anticipated to appear for CUET 2027, making these reforms potentially impactful for loads of aspirants.

Proposed CUET UG 2027 Exam Pattern and Duration Changes

A key proposed administrative change for CUET 2027 is the adoption of a ‘one student, one day’ examination system. Previously, candidates often had to visit test centres two to three times across a 12 to 15-day window to complete their chosen subjects. Under the new proposal, while the overall CUET exam will still be conducted over several days, each student will take all their selected tests on a single day, as stated by Nishit Kumar and Drishti CUET.

Structural reforms are also under review, including a reduction in the duration and number of questions per paper. The CUET exam duration, which was previously 60 minutes per paper, may be reduced to 40 to 45 minutes. Concurrently, the total number of questions in CUET UG 2027 may decrease from 50 to 35-40 per paper. The exam mode, a Computer-based Test, and the Class 12 NCERT-based syllabus are not reported to have any changes for 2027.

Parameter CUET UG 2026 (current) Reportedly proposed for 2027 Status
Exam days per student 2–3 days, multiple visits All selected subjects on one day Proposal
Duration per paper 60 minutes 40–45 minutes Proposal
Questions per paper 50 35–40 Proposal
Maximum subjects 5 Possibly 4 Under review by NTA and UGC
Overall exam window Spread across several days 12–15 days, each student allotted one slot Proposal
Syllabus Class 12 NCERT-based No change reported —
Mode Computer-based test No change reported —

These changes could alter the time available per question. For instance, with the current pattern of 50 questions in 60 minutes, candidates have 72 seconds per question. Under the proposed changes, if there are 35 questions in 45 minutes, the time per question would increase to 77.1 seconds. However, if there are 40 questions in 40 minutes, the time per question would reduce to 60 seconds.

Scenario Questions Time Seconds per question
Current (2026) 50 60 min 72.0
Proposed, best case 35 45 min 77.1
Proposed, mid case 40 45 min 67.5
Proposed, worst case 40 40 min 60.0

Impact on Subject Choices and University Admission Criteria

Another significant proposed change involves reducing the maximum number of subjects a student can opt for in the CUET exam from five to potentially four. CUET currently offers 37 subjects, comprising 13 languages, 23 domain subjects, and one general aptitude test. With five subjects, the total exam duration would be 200 minutes (3 hours and 20 minutes), while with four subjects, it would be 160 minutes (2 hours and 40 minutes).

This reduction in the subject cap could necessitate adjustments to university admission requirements. Currently, CUET participating universities, such as Delhi University with its strict subject combination rules and many state universities in Uttar Pradesh making the general aptitude test mandatory, lack uniform admission criteria. If the total subject cap is set at four, the UGC might be instructed to ensure that CUET 2027 participating universities adjust their admission requirements accordingly. Also, every university may be required to formally recognise and accept the general aptitude test.

CUET PG 2027: Potential for Direct Merit-Based Admissions

For the CUET PG exam 2027, a new proposal suggests that the exam might not be mandatory for admission to various postgraduate courses where candidate applications fall below the available seat capacity. For example, if a CUET PG course offers 500 seats and the NTA receives fewer than 500 applications, the exam for that specific course will be scrapped, and admissions will shift to a direct merit-based system.

If you look at the facts, over 30 CUET PG subjects currently fall under this low-application category. This change aims to simplify admissions for less popular subjects and benefit students by potentially removing the need to appear for an entrance exam in such cases.

Official Notification and Timeline

As of 6 October 2026, authorities have not explicitly announced any of these changes for CUET 2027. These modifications are still under review and form part of the operational roadmap being finalised by the Ministry of Education, UGC, and NTA. The official notification from NTA and UGC is expected to be released soon.

The CUET UG 2027 Information Bulletin has not yet been released by NTA. The official CUET UG 2027 notification is anticipated around December 2026 to January 2027, with the examination expected to be conducted in its usual May–June window.
