The Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), and National Testing Agency (NTA) have put forward a proposal to set up substantial changes to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2027 examination pattern. These proposed revisions include a ‘One Student, One Day’ exam model and a reduced duration for the test.
The modifications are aimed at addressing concerns such as student test fatigue, the financial burden of outstation travel expenses, and the time commitment involved in the current examination structure. Also, the changes seek to simplify the eligibility criteria for university admissions across India.
Proposed Changes for CUET UG 2027
For the CUET UG 2027 edition, a key proposal is the introduction of a ‘One Student, One Day’ exam pattern. This model is designed to ensure that each student completes their examination within a single day, a departure from multi-day testing schedules. Alongside this, the overall duration of the CUET UG 2027 examination is also expected to be reduced.
These adjustments, as outlined by the Ministry of Education, UGC, and NTA, are intended to simplify the examination process for candidates. The reduction in exam duration and the single-day format are expected to mitigate the stress associated with prolonged testing periods and reduce the logistical challenges faced by students, particularly those traveling from other cities or towns.
CUET UG Participation and Mandate in 2023
The CUET UG 2023 examination saw a notable increase in participation compared to its inaugural year. A total of 116 universities participated in CUET UG 2023, which included 26 new universities joining the fold. This marked an increase from the 90 universities that participated in the debut edition of the CUET UG.
In a significant development for the 2023 academic year, the UGC made it mandatory for all participating universities to use CUET scores for their undergraduate admissions. While relying on CUET scores became compulsory, the UGC allowed universities flexibility in designing their specific admission processes. The CUET UG 2023 exam was conducted from May 21 to May 31, 2023, with application forms available for submission until March 12, 2023.
Expansion of Participating Universities in 2023
The 2023 edition of CUET UG also saw an expansion in the number of central universities included in the examination framework. Ten universities that had previously been exempted from CUET UG were brought under its ambit, with the exception of Nagaland University.
Nine central universities were specifically added to CUET UG in 2023. These institutions included Manipur University, Assam University, Sikkim University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Tezpur University, Tripura University, Mizoram University, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU). This expansion aimed to standardize the admission process across a broader range of central universities.
