CUET 2027: Ministry of Education proposes ‘one student, one day’ exam, shorter duration
In short
- Around 15 lakh students are expected to appear for CUET UG 2027, with proposed changes aiming to reduce test fatigue and travel expenses.
- A key proposal for CUET UG 2027 is a 'one student, one day' exam system, where all selected subjects would be taken on a single day.
- The duration per paper for CUET UG 2027 may be reduced from 60 minutes to 40-45 minutes, and the maximum subjects from five to four.
- For CUET PG 2027, the exam may not be mandatory for courses where applications fall below the available seat capacity.
- The official notification for CUET UG 2027 is anticipated between December 2026 and January 2027.
The Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), and National Testing Agency (NTA) are in the process of finalising a roadmap for significant changes to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2027. These proposed reforms, applicable to both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) examinations, aim to address issues such as test fatigue, outstation travel expenses, and time commitments for candidates across India.
Approximately 15 lakh students are expected to appear for CUET UG 2027. The proposed changes are both administrative and structural, intending to smooth out the examination process and introduce more uniform university eligibility criteria. The CUET UG 2027 examination is expected to be held in its usual May, June window.
Proposed Changes for CUET UG 2027 Exam Pattern
A central proposal for CUET UG 2027 is rolling out a ‘one student, one day’ exam system. Under this model, candidates would take all their selected subjects on a single day, a departure from the previous system where candidates often visited test centres two to three times over a 12 to 15-day window. This change is intended to reduce multi-day trips, food, and accommodation costs, particularly benefiting outstation and rural students.
Further structural adjustments include a potential reduction in the duration per paper from the current 60 minutes to 40-45 minutes. The total number of questions per paper may also decrease from 50 to 35-40. In addition, the maximum number of subjects a candidate can pick for CUET UG 2027 might be reduced from five to four. Currently, CUET offers 37 subjects, comprising 13 languages, 23 domain subjects, and one general aptitude test. If the total subject cap is set at four, the UGC might instruct universities to adjust their admission requirements accordingly.
| Parameter | CUET UG 2026 (current) | Reportedly proposed for 2027 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam days per student | 2–3 days, multiple visits | All selected subjects on one day | Proposal |
| Duration per paper | 60 minutes | 40–45 minutes | Proposal |
| Questions per paper | 50 | 35–40 | Proposal |
| Maximum subjects | 5 | Possibly 4 | Under review by NTA and UGC |
| Overall exam window | Spread across several days | 12–15 days, each student allotted one slot | Proposal |
| Syllabus | Class 12 NCERT-based | No change reported | — |
| Mode | Computer-based test | No change reported | — |
Implications of Shorter Duration and Fewer Subjects
A shorter paper duration, if implemented, would enable examination agencies to conduct exams more swiftly. However, this would necessitate better time management skills from students. The reduction in the number of questions means that each question would carry a higher weightage, potentially increasing competition and requiring greater accuracy from candidates. With five subjects, the total exam hours currently stand at 200 minutes (3 hours and 20 minutes), while with four subjects, the total exam hours would be 160 minutes (2 hours and 40 minutes).
The current CUET UG 2026 pattern gives candidates 60 minutes and 50 compulsory questions per paper, with candidates able to select a maximum of five subjects. The CUET syllabus remains based on Class 12 NCERT. The exam mode will continue to be a Computer-based Test (CBT).
| Scenario | Questions | Time | Seconds per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current (2026) | 50 | 60 min | 72.0 |
| Proposed, best case | 35 | 45 min | 77.1 |
| Proposed, mid case | 40 | 45 min | 67.5 |
| Proposed, worst case | 40 | 40 min | 60.0 |
CUET PG 2027 and University Admission Criteria
For CUET PG 2027, a significant change under consideration is making the exam non-mandatory for courses where the number of applications falls below the available seat capacity. For instance, if a CUET PG course offers 500 seats and the NTA receives fewer than 500 applications, the exam for that specific subject would be scrapped. Over 30 CUET PG subjects reportedly fall under this low-application category in past cycles.
Currently, CUET participating universities do not have uniform admission criteria, leading to inconsistencies. Delhi University, for example, has strict CUET subject combination rules, while many state universities in Uttar Pradesh have made the general aptitude test mandatory. The proposed changes aim to address these disparities and potentially speed up admission requirements across the 200+ universities that use CUET UG scores.
Timeline for Official Notifications
As of October 8, 2026, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet released the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) 2027 Information Bulletin. Official notification for CUET UG 2027 is anticipated to be issued between December 2026 and January 2027. The CUET UG 2027 examination is expected to be conducted within its usual May–June window.
Students are advised to regularly monitor the official CUET portal, cuet.nta.nic.in, for updates. It is important for candidates not to assume that any specific CUET UG or Postgraduate (PG) rule has changed until an official notification is released by the Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), or NTA.
