IIT Roorkee invites applications for assistant professor positions: apply online

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has announced that it is accepting applications for Assistant Professor positions from Indian nationals. These positions are open across 33 departments, schools, and centres within the institution, aimed at recruiting faculty members with strong academic and professional backgrounds.

Applications for these Assistant Professor roles are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year, with no specific last date for submission under the general advertisement. However, a Special Recruitment Drive for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, and PD candidates, advertised on November 13, 2025, had a deadline of January 15, 2026.

Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

Interested and eligible candidates are required to apply online through the IIT Roorkee recruitment portal at facultyselection.iitr.ac.in. Applicants have the option to apply to multiple departments, schools, or centres. The institute encourages meritorious individuals from under-represented groups with strong academic records to apply. While specific qualifications and experience are outlined, these may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates.

The eligibility criteria for Assistant Professor positions are categorised into Grade-I and Grade-II. Assistant Professor Grade-I requires a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent at the preceding degree, a very good academic record, and a minimum of 3 years of industrial, research, or teaching experience, excluding the Ph.D. period. Assistant Professor Grade-II requires a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent at the preceding degree and a very good academic record throughout.

Remuneration and Benefits

IIT Roorkee offers competitive pay scales and a range of benefits for selected Assistant Professors. Assistant Professor Grade-I falls under Academic Pay Level-12, with a pay scale ranging from Rs. 1,01,500 to Rs. 1,67,400. Assistant Professor Grade-II is placed in Academic Pay Level-10, with a pay scale of Rs. 57,700 to Rs. 98,200, with a minimum starting pay of Rs. 89,800 at Cell No. 16.

Progression in pay levels is also outlined. An Assistant Professor Grade-I moves to Academic Pay Level 13A1 (Rs. 1,31,400-2,04,700) upon completing 3 years of service. An Assistant Professor Grade-II moves to Academic Pay Level-11 after one year of service and after that to Academic Pay Level-12 after three years. The institute also provides a fellowship of ₹30,000 per month for 3 years for eligible Assistant Professors joining on regular or initial contract positions.

Additional Grants and Allowances

Beyond the basic pay, IIT Roorkee offers several grants and allowances to support faculty members. This includes a joining/relocation travel reimbursement of up to ₹1 lakh for those working in India and up to ₹1.5 lakh for those working abroad. A Professional Development Allowance of ₹3 lakh is provided for 3 years, and a Faculty Initiation Grant of up to ₹20 lakh for 2 years is available upon submission of a research proposal. An additional grant of up to ₹2 lakh for a laptop, printer, and other equipment is also available at the time of joining.

Interviewees called for selection will have their to and fro travel expenses within India reimbursed. Economy class airfare tickets for reimbursement must be purchased through authorised agents such as IRCTC, BLCL, or ATT. Accommodation will be provided in one of the institute’s guest houses for candidates attending interviews. Other benefits, including medical benefits, Children Education Allowance, and LTC, are provided as per institute rules.
