- Candidates can access the cutoff for all IITs on the official website of CCMT.
The GATE IIT MTech cutoff for M.Tech admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is anticipated to be released following the declaration of GATE 2026 results, which are typically out by March. Registrations for the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) and Centralised Counselling for MTech (CCMT) will open soon after, supporting admissions to various M.Tech programs.
Lakhs of candidates compete for a limited number of seats in M.Tech programs across IITs, NITs, and IIITs each year. The GATE CSE cutoff marks and scores are influenced by factors such as the number of available GATE seats, the difficulty level of the Computer Science and Engineering paper, and the total number of applicants who appeared for the exam.
Understanding GATE Cutoffs for M.Tech Admission
Admission to M.Tech programs in IITs through GATE scores requires candidates to both qualify the GATE exam and participate in the mandatory counselling process. All IITs offer M.Tech seats to GATE-qualified candidates via the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP), which also supports admissions to IISc. The overall counselling process is based on the GATE result.
There are two types of cutoffs relevant to GATE: the Qualifying Cutoff, which is the minimum score required to pass the GATE exam, and the Admission Cutoff, which is the actual mark or score institutes use during counselling. The admission cutoff is consistently higher than the qualifying cutoff. For the GATE CSE paper, approximately 2 lakh students appeared in GATE 2026.
GATE 2026 CSE Qualifying Cutoff and Score Analysis
The official qualifying GATE CSE Cutoff 2026 has been announced, providing a baseline for eligibility. GATE marks represent the raw score obtained in the exam, calculated out of 100, while GATE scores are normalised values calculated out of 1000. For instance, a GATE CSE raw mark of 65+ typically converts to a GATE score above 800.
The cutoff for IITs through GATE generally ranges from 780-900+ for the general category for top GATE papers. For the reserved category, obtaining 400+ allows candidates to secure admission to GATE CSE, ECE, and ME branches. IIT Khanpur released the GATE 2023 cutoff after the declaration of results for that year.
| Category | Official Qualifying GATE CSE Cutoff 2026 (Marks out of 100) |
|---|---|
| General (UR) | 30 |
| OBC-NCL / EWS | 27 |
| SC / ST / PwD | 20 |
IIT and NIT Admission Processes
Each IIT will release its own GATE cutoff, which will differ based on factors including the total number of candidates qualified, the difficulty level of the examination, and the availability of seats for a particular course. IIT M.Tech CSE admission is specifically conducted through COAP. Individual IITs consider the GATE score, and in some cases, a written test or interview, along with academic performance, before releasing their cutoffs.
NITs, then again, admit M.Tech students through CCMT counselling. NIT cutoffs are released round-wise and are subject to change between rounds. Candidates will be able to view the cutoff for all IITs on the official website of CCMT. IIT Madras stated, “The indicated number will be considered as the maximum number of available seats for that group of eligible disciplines, and the seats will be allotted from the combined merit list (along with discipline mentioned in the first row).”
GATE Exam Structure and Syllabus
The GATE exam syllabus encompasses General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and core subject topics specific to each paper. The exam consists of 65 questions in total, carrying a maximum of 100 marks. Out of these, 10 questions are from General Aptitude, and the remaining 55 questions are from the chosen subject paper.
Previous years’ cutoffs also play a role in determining the GATE CSE cutoff for the current year. The GATE exam is known for its competitiveness, with a large number of applicants vying for limited M.Tech seats in premier institutions.
