IIM: Apply for PI/WAT in January 2027; final results by May

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are set to initiate their shortlisting process for the Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) rounds for PGP/MBA admission for the 2027-2029 academic batch. This multi-stage selection process will span from January to May 2027, culminating in the commencement of MBA classes in July 2027.

The admission cycle, which aims to select candidates based on CAT scores, academic history, work experience, and diversity factors, will see IIMs releasing their specific shortlisting criteria prior to the CAT 2026 result announcement. The CAT 2026 exam is scheduled for November 29, 2026, and will be conducted by IIM Indore for approximately 2.9 lakh MBA aspirants.

IIM Shortlisting and Selection Process for 2027

The IIM shortlisting and selection process for MBA admission in 2027 involves three distinct stages. Stage 1 focuses on shortlisting candidates primarily based on their CAT 2026 exam score. Following this, candidates are required to apply for the WAT/GD-PI round on each IIM’s official website, aligning their CAT score with the respective CAT cut-offs.

Stage 2 involves the screening of these applicants for the WAT-GD-PI rounds, with invites being dispatched to eligible candidates. The final stage, Stage 3, entails calculating a composite score for each candidate. This score is derived from various parameters, including the CAT score, performance in the WAT-PI rounds, academic history, relevant work experience, and diversity factors.

Candidates must fill out specific shortlist forms to participate in the WAT-PI process, using their CAT login IDs. This application window is typically open for a duration of one week only. Required documents for the WAT-GD-PI rounds include original and self-attested photocopies of marksheets for Class 10, Class 12, and Graduation. Also, SC, ST, NC-OBC, and PwD candidates must provide original and self-attested photocopies of their caste/class and/or disability certificates. Candidates appearing for their final year bachelor’s degree examination need to present a certificate from their institution confirming a minimum of 50% aggregate or equivalent, with a 45% requirement for SC, ST, and PwD categories.

Expected CAT Cut-Offs and Weightage Criteria

Qualifying CAT cut-offs for the 2027 academic year are anticipated to be between 80-90 percentile for the General category. However, the final CAT cut-offs for admission are expected to be significantly higher, potentially ranging from 98-100 percentile. Each IIM campus will release its specific MBA shortlisting criteria before the CAT 2026 result announcement, with IIMs beginning to release PI shortlists once the CAT 2026 scorecard is made available.

The IIM shortlisting criteria are a composite formula that integrates CAT scores with academic performance, work experience, and diversity factors. Each of the 21 IIMs designs its own weightage formula within the broad framework established by the IIM Common Admission Process (CAP). Sectional cutoffs are as crucial as the overall percentile; a strong overall score combined with a weak section can lead to disqualification at IIMs that enforce independent sectional thresholds. Non-CAT parameters such as Class 10th and 12th marks, graduation percentage, stream diversity, gender diversity, and work experience carry substantial weight in the composite score. IIMs actively seek to create diverse classrooms, offering bonus diversity points to candidates from non-engineering backgrounds and additional points to female and transgender candidates to enhance gender ratios on campus. Relevant, full-time, post-graduation work experience, typically capped between 24-36 months for maximum points, also contributes to the composite score at several IIMs.

Timeline for IIM Admissions 2027

The admission process for the MBA 2027-2029 batch is scheduled to be completed by June 2027. Following the announcement of shortlists in January 2027, interviews will be conducted from February to April 2027. The final merit list, leading to admission, will be released in May 2027 for all IIM campuses. MBA classes for the 2027 batch are slated to commence in July 2027.

For the previous 2026-28 batch, CAT results were declared on December 24, 2025, with interview shortlists beginning to release from January 2026. Older IIMs such as Ahmedabad and Calcutta issue individual invitations for interviews, while newer IIMs often use common methods like the Common Admission Process (CAP) for IIM Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Nagpur, and Sirmaur, or the SAP and JAP processes (Raipur-led for Ranchi, Trichy, Kashipur) for candidate evaluation.
