Available PhD Programmes and Eligibility Criteria

IISc Bangalore offers PhD programmes across various departments, centres, and units. These include Astronomy and Astrophysics (AP), Biochemistry (BC), Ecological Sciences (ES), High Energy Physics (HE), Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IN), Inorganic and Physical Chemistry (IP), and Materials Research (MR).

Eligibility requirements vary by programme. For Astronomy and Astrophysics (AP), candidates need a Master’s degree or equivalent in Physical, Mathematical, or Chemical Sciences, an M.E./M.Tech in a relevant discipline, a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. This programme is a collaborative effort with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), ISRO, and Raman Research Institute (RRI).

For Biochemistry (BC), candidates must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of Science, a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine/Engineering/Technology/Agriculture/Veterinary Science/Pharmacy, an M.E./M.Tech in a relevant discipline, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. Similarly, Ecological Sciences (ES) requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in Science/Engineering/Agriculture/Veterinary Science, an MA in Geography/Psychology, a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine/Engineering/Technology/Agriculture/Veterinary Science, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree.

High Energy Physics (HE) candidates need a Master’s degree or equivalent in Physical, Mathematical, Chemical Sciences, a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. For Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IN) PhD and M.Tech.(Research), eligible candidates include those with a B.E./B.Tech in Instrumentation, Electrical, Electronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Mechanical Engineering, an M.E./M.Tech in a relevant discipline, an M.Sc. in Physics/Materials Science, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with Physics/Materials Science as a major subject.

Inorganic and Physical Chemistry (IP) PhD applicants require a Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of Science/Engineering/Technology, or a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Science/Medicine/Engineering/Technology. Candidates for this programme have the option to specify a stream (Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or Theoretical Chemistry) during their interview. For Materials Research (MR) PhD, candidates should possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or Physics, an M.E./M.Tech in a relevant discipline, a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Ceramic Engineering/Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering/Biotechnology, or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree.
