India plans central exam calendar: UPSC, SSC, NTA streamline 2027 cycles

India’s major central recruitment bodies, including the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Staff Selection Commission (SSC), National Testing Agency (NTA), Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), and Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), are moving towards a more streamlined examination calendar. This initiative aims to reduce clashes and provide clarity for the millions of aspirants seeking government jobs and university admissions across the country.

These agencies manage extensive recruitment operations annually, with the SSC alone conducting 20 examinations for 20.5 crore candidates in 2024-25. The Railway recruitment process saw approximately 45 million candidates take computer-based tests across the 2024 and 2025 cycles, while the NTA conducted 48 examinations for 8.01 million candidates in 2024.

Upcoming Examinations and Application Windows

Several key examinations are currently underway or scheduled for the coming months. The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) Prelims were conducted on 24 May 2026, with Mains scheduled for 21–30 August 2026. For the 2027 cycle, UPSC has released its Annual Calendar, with CSE applications open until 6 October 2026 and Prelims tentatively set for 31 January 2027.

The SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Tier 1 is expected in August–September 2026, followed by Tier 2 in December 2026. The SSC CGL 2026 notification was released on 21 May 2026, announcing 12,256 tentative vacancies, with the application window closing on 25 June 2026. Banking examinations also have active schedules; SBI PO Prelims were conducted on 1 and 2 August 2026, with Mains scheduled for September 2026. IBPS PO Prelims are scheduled for 22 and 23 August 2026, and Mains for 4 October 2026.

Changes in Examination Patterns and Preparation

Recent examination cycles have introduced several structural and procedural changes across various recruitment processes. The SSC CGL now features a two-tier exam structure, with the final merit decided entirely on Tier 2 performance. Sectional timing has been introduced in SSC CGL exams, and a new Paper III covering Finance and Economics has been added to Tier 2 for AAO and AAAO aspirants.

For banking recruitments, a Personality Test has been added to the IBPS PO process this cycle; it is mandatory but non-qualifying. The RBI Grade B 2026 notification, released on 29 April 2026, announced 60 vacancies across General, DEPR, and DSIM categories. These changes necessitate adapted preparation strategies for candidates.

Importance of Official Calendars and Direct Sources

The exam calendar is a critical document for government job aspirants, influencing their entire year and preparation plans. Missing an application window, which often closes months before the exam, can lead to the loss of an entire year. Knowing exam dates aids in developing realistic study plans, allocating time for subjects, and avoiding last-minute preparation.

Candidates are advised to rely on official websites such as upsc.gov.in, ssc.gov.in, and ibps.in for the most accurate and updated information, as dates can be revised. For instance, serious UPSC CSE candidates are encouraged to begin structured answer writing practice well before the Prelims result is released, given the roughly three-month gap between Prelims and Mains. Similarly, SSC CHSL candidates are advised to start daily typing practice early, and SBI PO aspirants should regularly read a business daily for general awareness, particularly banking and economic news from the preceding six months.
