CLAT 2027 eligibility criteria released: apply by October 31

The eligibility criteria for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs were released by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) on July 22, 2026. This announcement provides clarity for candidates aspiring to secure admission to five-year integrated LLB and LLM programs offered by the 24 national law colleges and over 60 affiliated law schools across India.

The CLAT 2027 application process commenced on August 3, 2026, and is set so on October 31, 2026. The examination itself will be conducted offline on December 6, 2026, determining eligibility for many legal education opportunities.

Educational Qualifications and Minimum Marks

For candidates seeking admission to the CLAT UG program, the primary educational requirement is to have passed the 10+2 or an equivalent examination. General, Other Backward Classes (OBC), Persons with Disabilities (PwD), Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) candidates must secure a minimum of 45% aggregate marks in their 10+2 examination. A concession is provided for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, who need a minimum of 40% aggregate marks in 10+2.

Prospective students for the CLAT PG program must possess an LL.B. Degree or an equivalent qualification. General, OBC, PwD, and NRI candidates are required to have a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their LL.B. degree. For SC and ST candidates applying for CLAT PG, the minimum aggregate mark requirement is 45% in their LL.B. degree. The Consortium of NLUs has affirmed that CLAT UG is open to students from any academic stream, including Arts, Commerce, and Science.

Age Limit and Application Process

A significant aspect of the CLAT 2027 eligibility criteria is the absence of an upper age limit for candidates appearing for both the UG and PG programs. This policy, which saw the removal of the upper age cap for CLAT UG in 2017 by the Consortium of NLUs, continues for the upcoming examination cycle. In addition, candidates who are appearing for their qualifying examination in March/April 2027 are eligible to apply for CLAT UG, and those appearing for their qualifying examination in 2027 are eligible for CLAT PG, provided they produce evidence of passing at the time of admission.

The application fee for CLAT 2027 is Rs. 4,000 for General category candidates. For SC and ST applicants, the application fee is Rs. 3,500. There is no stated limit on the number of attempts a candidate can make for either CLAT UG or CLAT PG. Applicants are advised to attach pertinent photos, signatures, and relevant category/PwD/BPL certificates during the application procedure. Candidates requesting reservations must present the pertinent certificates, and those in NRI and foreign categories should check the specific university’s brochure during counselling for detailed information.
