Jadavpur University is conducting its own counselling today, October 28, 2026, to fill 182 vacant BTech seats. The university has set a JEE cut-off of 12,000 for these admissions, with a notice for this counselling issued around the same date.

This initiative aims to address a bunch of BTech vacancies, which stood at 408 after the state JEE board centralised counselling. The total number of BTech seats at Jadavpur University is 1253, indicating that over 400 seats were initially vacant.
Vacant Seats and Admission Criteria
Out of the 182 BTech seats currently being filled through the university’s counselling, 33 are in Civil Engineering and 11 are in Electrical Engineering. Maximum vacancies were previously noted in Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The university had 48 seats with no takers after the state JEE board conducted centralised counselling.
Admission to B.E./B.Tech, B.Pharm, and B.Arch programs at Jadavpur University is primarily conducted through WBJEE, followed by centralised counselling by WBJEEB. Jadavpur University does not conduct a separate engineering entrance exam for these programs.
Eligibility for B.E./B.Tech admission requires candidates to be at least 17 years old as of December 31, 2026. The qualifying examination is 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
| Category | PCM Aggregate | Mathematics Score |
|---|---|---|
| General/EWS | 60% | 60% |
| SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/PwD | 45% | 45% |
In addition, candidates must have at least 30% pass marks in English in their qualifying exam. Approximately 90% of general seats for B.E./B.Tech are reserved for West Bengal domicile candidates, with seats allotted strictly based on WBJEE rank, category, and domicile through WBJEEB counselling.
Context of Vacancies and Student Preferences
The current counselling follows a period where a substantial number of BTech seats remained vacant. The university had sent a withdrawal form to enrolled students, leading to 360 students backing out by Tuesday evening. This contributed to the total vacancy figure of 408 after the state JEE board centralised counselling.
Atal Chaudhuri, JU’s dean of engineering and technology, stated that the total vacancy count was expected to reach 450 by December 8, when the option for withdrawal against a refund of the admission fee amounting to Rs 5,000 ends. A JU official indicated that the high number of vacancies in disciplines like computer science and engineering and electronics and telecommunication engineering suggests that “bright students of Bengal are opting for the IITs and NITs.” The official further noted, “While the inclination for switching to the IITs was prevalent, the preference for the NITs is posing a fresh challenge.”
The seventh and final round of counselling for admission to NITs by JOSAA was expected to be completed by Wednesday, which could potentially lead to more vacancies at Jadavpur University. The university’s NIRF ranking in the engineering category has slipped from 9th in 2017 to its current 17th position.
