The admission process involves an entrance test, followed by an interview for qualified candidates. The university has also outlined specific eligibility criteria, duration of the program, and provisions for female scholars and persons with disabilities.

Admission Process and Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who satisfy the specified eligibility criteria will be required to appear for a PhD entrance test conducted by MIT-WPU. The entrance test is qualifying in nature, with a minimum requirement of 50% marks to pass. A relaxation in the qualifying marks, from 50% to 45%, will be extended to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer), Differently Abled categories, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other specified categories.

The syllabus for the entrance test will be divided equally, with 50% focusing on research methodology and the remaining 50% on subject-specific content. Following the entrance test, qualified candidates will be invited for an interview or viva-voce conducted by the university. For final selection, the entrance test carries a weightage of 70%, while performance in the interview/viva-voce accounts for 30%. Candidates who are qualified in GATE, NET, JRF, SET, GPAT, or CEED will be selected based solely on their performance in the interview/viva-voce.

For PhD in Statistics, specific eligibility includes graduates of 4-year Bachelor of Science programmes or Engineering & Technology (with sufficient Statistics background) with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 or above. Alternatively, candidates with a Master’s degree in mathematical sciences, physical sciences, or Engineering & Technology (with sufficient Statistics background) and a minimum CGPA of 6.0 or 55% marks in aggregate are eligible. Provisional admission will be offered via email to recommended candidates, with final admission confirmed upon successful completion of coursework with 55% or more, as per UGC norms.

Program Duration and Support

The PhD program at MIT-WPU is structured to have a minimum duration of three years, which includes coursework, and a maximum duration of six years from the date of admission. In specific circumstances, an additional two years may be granted through re-registration, extending the total maximum duration to eight years. Female PhD scholars and persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) are eligible for an additional relaxation of two years, allowing them a maximum total duration of ten years to complete their program.

Female candidates enrolled in the PhD program may also avail Maternity Leave or Child Care Leave for up to 240 days throughout the entire duration of their doctoral studies. Full-time PhD candidates will be provided with a stipend, the details of which will be in accordance with MIT-WPU norms.
