Odisha CHSE Plus 2 Science syllabus rationalised for 2027-24 batch

The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, has rationalised the Plus 2 Science syllabus and examination pattern. These changes are applicable from the academic session 2023-24 for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, while the rationalised Mathematics syllabus applies to Class XI students admitted from the 2023-24 session.

The modifications, approved by the Academic Committee and the Council, aim to align the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology syllabi with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum. A notification detailing these revisions has been issued to all Higher Secondary Education stakeholders affiliated with CHSE, Odisha.

Syllabus Rationalisation and Applicability

The syllabi for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology have been rationalised in accordance with CBSE guidelines. This rationalised syllabus is applicable for regular students who will appear in the Annual Higher Secondary Examination 2024 in these subjects. The CHSE Odisha Class 12 Science syllabus includes Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, along with prescribed electives.

For Mathematics, the rationalised syllabus is applicable for Class XI students admitted from the 2023-24 session. However, Class XII students of the 2023-24 session appearing in the Annual Higher Secondary Examination 2024 in Mathematics will use the old syllabus. All other subjects across science, arts, commerce, and vocational streams remain unchanged for the Annual Higher Secondary Examinations, 2024.

Revised Examination Pattern for Class XII

The examination pattern for Class XII students appearing in the Annual Higher Secondary Examination 2024 has been modified. Quarter-end Examinations, which previously consisted of three tests, have been replaced by two Internal Tests. These Internal Tests will carry a 20% weightage, with the remaining 80% weightage allocated to the Annual/Instant Examination, encompassing both theory and practical components.

The question pattern for these Internal Tests will be consistent with that of the Quarter-end Examinations conducted during the 2022-2023 session. The Council will issue guidelines and a schedule for the conduct of these Internal Tests in due course.

Subject Structure and Recommended Resources

The CHSE Odisha offers a total of six subjects in Plus 2 Science. These include three compulsory subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and English. Students must also choose three optional subjects from a list that includes Biology, Mathematics, IT, Electronics, Statistics, and MIL (Odia/Hindi/Sanskrit/Alternative English).

For Chemistry studies, the Odisha CHSE recommends Bureau’s Higher Secondary (+2) CHEMISTRY, VOL-I & II. The Biology subject is divided into two sections, Botany (Section A) and Zoology (Section B), each carrying 35 marks. Examinations for both sections will be conducted in the same shift with a 20-minute gap. The Mathematics syllabus consists of five units, each carrying an equal weightage of 20 marks. Recommended books for Physics include Physics – Part 1 and Part 2 by NCERT, and Bureau’s Higher Secondary Physics Vol-2 by Odisha State Bureau of Text Book Preparation and Production.
