Seat Allocation Criteria and Reservation Norms

The seat allocation for Tamil Nadu NEET 2026 round 3 is determined by the state medical selection committee based on four primary criteria. These include the State Merit Rank, the Option Choices Locked by candidates, the Virtual & Clear Vacancy Seat Matrix, and Reservation Norms. The State Merit Rank is generated from the NEET UG 2026 scorecard and adherence to Tamil Nadu domicile criteria.

Option Choices Locked refers to the exact sequential order of preferred medical and dental colleges submitted by candidates during the choice-locking window. The Virtual & Clear Vacancy Seat Matrix comprises seats remaining vacant after Round 2, along with seats freed up due to upward candidate relocations. Reservation Norms incorporate State communal reservation policies, including Open Competition (OC), Backward Class (BC), Backward Class Muslim (BCM), Most Backward Class/Denotified Communities (MBC/DNC), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar (SCA), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and a 7.5% preferential reservation for government school students.

Background of NEET UG 2026 Examination

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG) is the sole entrance test for admissions to medical colleges in India, including AIIMS and JIPMER, following the enactment of the NMC Act 2019. The NEET (UG) 2026 exam, initially scheduled for May 3, 2026, was cancelled due to a paper leak. A re-examination was subsequently held on June 21, 2026, with the score card published on July 16, 2026.

The introduction of NEET has faced opposition from certain entities, notably the state of Tamil Nadu. Concerns have been raised regarding variations in state syllabi and potential advantages for affluent, urban, and upper-caste candidates through coaching institutions. A total of 2,279,743 candidates registered for NEET (UG) 2026, with 1,999,895 candidates appearing for the examination.
