Chhattisgarh schools closed today amid heavy rain, flood-like situation

The Chhattisgarh government today, September 26, 2026, declared a holiday for all government, private, and aided schools across the state. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on ‘X’, comes in response to heavy rainfall and a developing flood-like situation, with student safety cited as the primary concern.

This marks the second consecutive day of school closures in some areas, as holidays were also declared on Friday in districts including Dantewada, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Gariaband, Dhamtari, and Durg. The continuous rainfall has led to rising water levels in rivers and streams, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and disruptions to transportation, particularly in the Bastar region.

Government Directives and Preparedness

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasised that the safety of students is the top priority. He stated, “safety of students is the top priority.” District collectors have been instructed to conduct relief and rescue operations with full vigilance, with special attention to the Bastar division, which comprises seven districts. Officials are directed to continuously monitor the situation, focusing on low-lying areas and those near rivers and streams.

The administration has been urged to remain prepared to deal with every situation, keeping citizen safety as the highest priority. CM Sai further directed, “There should be no delay in providing assistance to people in need in affected areas. Keeping the safety of citizens as the highest priority, the administration should remain prepared to deal with every situation.” Relief and rescue teams are to remain ready with necessary resources, and district administrations, police, urban local bodies, panchayats, and other departments are to work in coordination. Officials are also directed to ensure safe shelters, food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential facilities for affected people.

Rainfall Overview and Incidents

Chhattisgarh has experienced continuous heavy rain over the last two to three days. Between June 1 and September 25, the state recorded an average of 1,082.4 mm rainfall, which is 100.1 per cent of its 10-year seasonal benchmark of 1,081.5 mm. Over the past 24 hours alone, the state received an average precipitation of 52.8 mm. However, rainfall distribution has varied across districts.

Tragically, a 40-year-old man died in a rain-related incident in Kondagaon district in the early hours of Friday. Also, a woman reportedly lost her life after a mud house collapsed in the Kurandi area of Bastar district. Road connectivity has been disrupted, and some remote settlements have been cut off due to the adverse weather conditions.

Bijapur district has recorded an average total rainfall of 1,466.9 mm across all its tehsils since June 1. The specific rainfall figures for its tehsils are detailed below.

Reservoir Levels and Water Release

Several reservoirs in the state are operating at high capacities due to the continuous rainfall. As of 8 AM today, the Gangrel reservoir was at 98.14% of its capacity, Murumsilli reservoir had reached 100% capacity, Dudhawa reservoir stood at 97.21% capacity, and Sondhur reservoir was at 88.18% capacity. To manage water levels, 10 gates at Gangrel reservoir were opened, releasing a total of 54,950 cusecs of water. Of this, 48,950 cusecs were released into the Mahanadi river, and 6,000 cusecs into a canal through the Rudri barrage.

In the Rajnandgaon region, 14,650 cusecs of water have been released from four barrages: 8,000 cusecs from Mogra Barrage, 1,250 cusecs from Ghumariya, 3,200 cusecs from Sukha Nala, and 2,200 cusecs from Khatutola. The water level at Mahmara Anicut on the Shivnath River rose from approximately over one foot at 8 AM on Friday to about two feet three inches by 11 AM today.

Weather Forecast and Public Advisory

The Meteorological Centre in Raipur has forecast light to moderate rain in most parts of Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours, with heavy showers and thunderstorms likely at isolated places. The Meteorological Department has also issued a warning predicting light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the state, with heavy rain in one or two locations, over the next three days. Very heavy rainfall is possible at isolated locations across 13 districts over the next few hours. These districts include Balod, Baloda Bazar, Bemetara, Dhamtari, Durg, Gariaband, Kabirdham, Kanker, Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai, Kondagaon, Mahasamund, Raipur, and Rajnandgaon.

Chief Minister Sai advised citizens, “Citizens should prioritise their own safety and that of their families. Follow the guidelines issued by the administration. Do not go near rivers, streams, waterfalls, or overflowing water bodies. Under no circumstances should you attempt to cross submerged bridges, culverts, or roads. Strictly adhere to administrative instructions at locations where safety barriers have been installed.” People are urged not to venture unnecessarily into waterlogged areas, swollen rivers, streams, or places with strong currents and to follow advisories issued by the district administration. In case of any emergency, citizens can dial 112 or seek help from the local administration.
