Chhattisgarh schools closed today, quarterly exams postponed amid heavy rain

The Chhattisgarh government has declared a holiday for all government, private, and aided schools across the state today, 26 September 2026. This decision was made due to heavy rainfall and a prevailing flood-like situation in several areas, with the Chief Minister stating that the “safety of students is the top priority.” Consequently, quarterly examinations scheduled in government schools in affected areas have been postponed.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced the closure via a post on ‘X’ and instructed all district collectors to conduct relief and rescue operations with full vigilance. The move aims to ensure student safety, considering potential waterlogging, rising water levels in rivers and streams, and difficulties in transportation. The Bastar division, comprising seven districts, is among the areas significantly affected by continuous rainfall.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall and Flood-Like Situation

Heavy rain has continued to affect several parts of Chhattisgarh over the last two to three days, leading to inundation of low-lying areas, swelling rivers and streams, and disrupting road connectivity. This has created flood-like situations, particularly in the Bastar region. Road connectivity has been affected, and some remote settlements have been cut off, with floodwater entering houses in low-lying colonies in Jagdalpur and submerging parts of National Highway-30, disrupting movement between Raipur and Jagdalpur. In Sukma and Bijapur, floodwater has cut off several villages.

A 40-year-old man died in a rain-related incident in Kondagaon district in the Bastar region in the early hours of 25 September 2026. Holidays were also declared on 25 September 2026 in schools in several districts, including Dantewada, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Gariaband, Dhamtari, and Durg. The Chief Minister urged parents to keep their children at home, remain alert, and avoid unnecessary travel, while directing officials to continuously monitor the situation, with special attention to low-lying areas and those near rivers.

Rainfall Data and Reservoir Status

Between 1 June and 25 September 2026, Chhattisgarh recorded an average of 1,082.4 mm rainfall, which is 100.1 per cent of the state’s 10-year seasonal benchmark of 1,081.5 mm. Over the past 24 hours alone, the state received an average precipitation of 52.8 mm. While some districts experienced above-normal rainfall, others received below-normal levels.

Heavy rain has caused water levels in rivers such as the Indravati, Mahanadi, and Shivnath to rise. Reservoir capacities are also being monitored. As of 8 am today, 26 September 2026, the Gangrel reservoir was at 98.14% of its capacity, Murumsilli at 100%, Dudhawa at 97.21%, and Sondhur at 88.18%. Authorities opened 10 gates at Gangrel, releasing 54,950 cusecs of water, with 48,950 cusecs directed into the Mahanadi river and 6,000 cusecs into a canal.

Forecast and Administrative Directives

The Meteorological Centre in Raipur has forecast light to moderate rain in most parts of Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours. As an answer to the ongoing situation, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasised that “There should be no delay in providing assistance to people in need in affected areas. Keeping the safety of citizens as the highest priority, the administration should remain prepared to deal with every situation.”

District collectors have been instructed to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of citizens. Students and parents in the affected districts where schools have been closed are advised to follow further announcements from their respective district administrations regarding the reopening of schools and the rescheduling of examinations.
