The National Testing Agency (NTA) today, October 9, 2026, announced a significant change for the Joint CSIR-UGC NET December 2026 examination, merging the DBT-BET (Biotechnology) examination with CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences. This integration introduces a new discipline named Life Sciences & Bio-technology (LS & BT), effective from the December 2026 examination cycle.
The CSIR NET December 2026 examination is scheduled to be conducted on December 20 and 21, 2026. This move aims to speed up the national examination framework and align assessments with the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of contemporary biological research.
Rationale Behind the Merger
The merger of the CSIR-NET (Life Sciences) and DBT-BET (Biotechnology) examinations, along with their syllabi, was approved to establish a single, unified National-level eligibility examination for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Lectureship in the biological sciences. Per the NTA, the primary objective is to smooth out evaluation, eliminate redundancy in testing, and build a cohesive and efficient assessment system.
This initiative reflects the dynamic growth of inter-disciplinary research in biological sciences, necessitating a unified and efficient system for evaluating research aptitude. The NTA stated that the examination is expected to assess broader conceptual understanding, analytical ability, and research aptitude rather than focusing solely on narrowly specialised subject areas.
Impact on Fellowships and Examination Pattern
Concerns raised by students regarding a possible reduction in fellowships have been addressed. The NTA has clarified that there will be no impact on the total number of fellowships due to the merger. CSIR and DBT will continue to provide fellowships as per the present process, with selection occurring through the common examination.
The merged examination will feature adequate optional questions covering both traditional Life Sciences and Biotechnology domains. The examination pattern will ensure equal opportunity for candidates from diverse academic backgrounds to attempt a sufficient number of questions from their respective areas of expertise. The question paper and evaluation process will be designed to assess conceptual understanding, analytical ability, and research aptitude in fundamental broader concepts.
Eligibility and Application Details
Under the latest available eligibility framework, candidates require a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification with 55% marks for General and General-EWS candidates. A relaxation to 50% marks is applicable for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, and Third Gender candidates. The upper age limit for JRF is 30 years, with applicable relaxations for eligible categories. There is no upper age limit for candidates seeking eligibility for Assistant Professor or PhD admission.
Joint CSIR-UGC-DBT-JRF Net exam qualified candidates of Biotechnology will be eligible for all three categories: Award of JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor, appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D., and admission to Ph.D. only. The CSIR NET December 2026 Notification and Application Form are currently awaited.
