GATE 2027: Apply from Aug 27 if in 3rd year or graduated; no age/attempt limit

GATE 2027, organised by IIT Madras, maintains its policy of having no age or attempt limits, making it accessible to many individuals, including working professionals and those seeking career transitions. The examination is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) with a duration of three hours, featuring Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

Eligibility for GATE 2027

The eligibility criteria for GATE 2027 confirm that candidates currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in their third year or higher are eligible. This includes students in the third year of a four-year degree like B.E./B.Tech or a five-year integrated programme. Final-year students are fully eligible and can apply with a certificate from their Head of Department. Individuals who have already completed an approved degree, regardless of their graduation year, are also eligible, extending the opportunity to working professionals.

The eligibility spans various academic backgrounds, including engineering, science, technology, commerce, architecture, arts, and humanities. Both Indian and international candidates are eligible to apply, provided they meet the specified educational qualifications. For Indian nationals, this typically involves a graduation degree in Engineering/Technology/Science/Arts/Humanities or a Master’s degree in any relevant discipline. International candidates must be in their third year or higher studies, or have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration in a relevant field.

Candidates with three-year degrees such as B.Sc., B.Com., or B.A. are eligible if they are in their third year or have completed their degree. Similarly, those with M.Sc., M.A., or MCA degrees are eligible from their first year or upon completion. There is no minimum percentage or CGPA required in the qualifying degree to appear for GATE, although many institutes and PSUs may set their own minimum criteria for M.Tech/Ph.D. admissions or recruitment, often around 60% or equivalent for general-category candidates.

Degree-Wise Eligibility and Candidate Situations

The detailed eligibility criteria clarify the status for various degree programmes and candidate situations. For instance, students in the first or second year of a B.Tech programme are generally not yet eligible, while those in their third year or beyond are. Similarly, candidates with a diploma alone are not eligible, but those who have completed a diploma and then entered a B.Tech programme laterally are eligible once they reach the third year of the degree.

The GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) paper does not have separate branch-specific eligibility rules, aligning with the broader eligibility framework. The GATE score remains valid for three years from the date of result announcement, offering flexibility to candidates in planning their higher education or career moves.

Application Process and Important Dates

Registration for GATE 2027 is scheduled to commence on September 2, 2026. Applications will be accessible through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) starting from August 27, 2026. Indian nationals will be required to register through a verified DigiLocker account.

Candidates are advised to thoroughly review the eligibility criteria before filling out the application form. Essential documents such as degree certificates, provisional certificates, or a certificate from a recognised body (for completed degrees) must be kept ready.
