The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has formally released the schedule for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (IIT JAM) 2027. Aspiring science graduates seeking admission to prestigious postgraduate programs across India can begin submitting their online applications starting September 5, 2026. The official portal for the national-level entrance exam has been launched at jam.iitkgp.ac.in.

IIT JAM serves as the single-window gateway for candidates aiming to secure admission into Master of Science (M.Sc.), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree, and other post-baccalaureate degree courses. Conducted on a rotational basis by premier institutes, this edition is being coordinated by IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with Indian Institutes of Technology nationwide and IISc Bangalore.

Step-by-Step Online Registration via JOAPS

All registration steps must be completed online through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS). The registration window will remain open for approximately five weeks.

  1. User Account Creation: Applicants must visit jam.iitkgp.ac.in and access the JOAPS registration link. Registration requires entering the candidate’s full name, a verified email address, an active mobile number, and creating a secure password. Upon submission, an Enrolment ID and OTP will be dispatched via SMS and email.

  2. Filling Educational & Personal Data: Log into the portal using the Enrolment ID and password. Fill out personal information, academic qualifications, and select three preferred exam cities from the provided list of test centers across the country.

  3. Document Uploads: Upload scanned files according to strict visual and size specifications:

    • Recent passport-size color photograph.

    • Scanned copy of candidate signature.

    • Valid Category Certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in PDF format, if applicable.

    • Physical Disability Certificate (PwD) with UDID number, if applicable.

  4. Fee Payment: The registration process is considered complete only after paying the non-refundable examination fee online using Net Banking, Debit/Credit Card, or UPI.

Examination Pattern and Test Papers

IIT JAM 2027 will be administered as a 3-hour Computer-Based Test (CBT) in the English medium. The test comprises seven distinct papers divided into two operational sessions on exam day:

  • Forenoon Session (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM):

    • Chemistry (CY)

    • Geology (GG)

    • Mathematics (MA)

  • Afternoon Session (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM):

    • Biotechnology (BT)

    • Economics (EN)

    • Mathematical Statistics (MS)

    • Physics (PH)

Candidates are allowed to appear in either one or two test papers. However, those selecting two papers must ensure both subjects fall into different test sessions.

Structural Breakdown of Question Paper (100 Total Marks)

The 60 questions in every subject paper are distributed across three sections:

  • Section A (MCQs): Consists of 30 Multiple Choice Questions (10 questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of 2 marks each). Negative marking applies: 1/3 mark is deducted for wrong 1-mark answers, and 2/3 mark is deducted for wrong 2-mark answers.

  • Section B (MSQs): Consists of 10 Multiple Select Questions carrying 2 marks each. Candidates must choose all correct options to score full marks; no partial credit or negative marking exists.

  • Section C (NATs): Consists of 20 Numerical Answer Type questions (10 questions of 1 mark each and 10 questions of 2 marks each). Answers are entered via an on-screen virtual keyboard. There is no negative marking.

Eligibility Criteria and Seat Intake

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree or be in the final year of their qualifying degree program during the 2026–2027 academic year. In line with revised policies, there is no minimum percentage or CGPA cutoff required to take the entrance test. Candidates need only pass their qualifying degree to secure admission, provided they meet subject-specific essential requirements set by individual institutes. Additionally, there is no age restriction for appearing in the exam.

Qualifying IIT JAM 2027 provides direct entry to approximately 3,000 seats across 21 IITs for various postgraduate degrees. Furthermore, JAM scores will be utilized by NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IISERs, and CFTIs through the Centralized Counselling for M.Sc. (CCMN) process.
