IIT Kharagpur today, October 13, 2026, launched an AI-powered learning assistant, named NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor, and a free online preparatory platform for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) exams. The initiatives, aimed at making quality education and competitive exam preparation more accessible, were inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata.

These launches are part of IIT Kharagpur’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and seek to reduce students’ dependence on expensive commercial coaching while expanding access to higher education opportunities, particularly for those from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiatives are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor for Personalised Learning
The NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor, developed in collaboration with Fermi AI, co-founded by IIT Kharagpur alumnus Shri Peeyush Ranjan, is integrated with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). This AI tutor provides free, personalised academic assistance to registered NDLI users, accessible through www.ndl.gov.in. The tutor employs a guided learning approach, encouraging students to understand concepts and solve problems independently rather than providing instant answers.
A key feature of the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor is its ‘Scan & Ask’ functionality, which allows students to seek assistance with problems in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. This feature is designed to help learners identify errors, strengthen their conceptual understanding, and develop problem-solving skills. Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Former Director, IIT Kharagpur, presented insights into the AI tutor and conducted a live demonstration during the launch event.
Free GATE and JAM Preparation Platform
Alongside the AI tutor, IIT Kharagpur also launched a free online preparatory platform specifically for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM). This platform uses IIT Kharagpur’s academic expertise and digital learning resources to provide thorough preparation materials.
The primary objective of this platform is to democratise access to quality competitive exam preparation, thereby reducing the financial burden on students who often rely on expensive commercial coaching centres. It is particularly aimed at improving access for students from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, aligning with the broader goal of strengthening India’s digital learning ecosystem.
Minister and Director on Education Accessibility
Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar emphasised the importance of using artificial intelligence responsibly in education. He stated, “The true power of Artificial Intelligence lies not in providing instant answers, but in nurturing the ability of young minds to think, question and discover solutions independently.” He added that the initiative marks a significant step towards democratising personalised education, bringing quality academic support closer to every learner, whether in a metropolitan city or a remote village.
IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty highlighted the institute’s commitment beyond its campus. He remarked, “As the country’s first IIT celebrates its Platinum Jubilee, we believe our responsibility extends far beyond our classrooms and campus.” He further stated that the initiatives represent IIT Kharagpur’s vision of transforming institutional excellence into national educational impact, contributing meaningfully to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
National Digital Library of India’s Role
The National Digital Library of India (NDLI), with which the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor is integrated, is sponsored by the Union Ministry of Education under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). The NDLI currently serves over one crore learners and hosts more than 130 million learning resources.
The integration of the AI tutor with NDLI aims to enhance the learning experience for its vast user base by providing personalised and guided academic assistance. This collaboration is intended to further strengthen India’s digital learning ecosystem and ensure that quality educational resources are accessible to a wider student population across the country.
