Aspiring candidates for postgraduate programmes in science and related disciplines must submit their applications through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) by the deadline of October 12, 2026.

The IIT JAM 2027 examination is a national-level Computer Based Test (CBT) scheduled for February 14, 2027. It serves as a gateway for admission to various postgraduate programmes, including M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech.), M.S. (Research), M.Sc.-M.Tech. Dual Degree, Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree, and Integrated Ph.D. programmes.

Application Process and Key Dates

The application window for IIT JAM 2027 opened on September 12, 2026, a revision from the earlier stated September 5, 2026, as per the latest information brochure released by IIT Kharagpur. Candidates have until October 12, 2026, to complete and submit their online applications. The examination itself will be held on February 14, 2027, in two shifts, across various examination cities within India, with no international centres planned.

To apply, candidates must first register on the JOAPS portal using a valid email ID and mobile number. Following registration, they can log in to complete the application form, select their preferred test paper(s) and examination cities, and upload necessary documents such as a recent photograph, signature, date of birth proof, and relevant category certificates. The final step involves paying the non-refundable application fee through online payment modes and submitting the form.

Eligibility Criteria and Examination Structure

Candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree are eligible to apply for IIT JAM 2027. Those appearing in the final examination of their qualifying undergraduate degree in 2027 are also permitted to apply. There is no specified age limit for appearing in the examination, nor is there any restriction on the number of attempts a candidate can make. Also, IIT Kharagpur has stated that there is no minimum percentage requirement for appearing in the JAM examination, and candidates with academic backlogs may apply, provided they fulfil the admission requirements.

The JAM 2027 examination will be conducted for seven test papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and Physics. Each test paper will have a duration of three hours and will contain 60 questions, carrying a total of 100 marks. The question paper is divided into three compulsory sections: Section A (Multiple Choice Questions – MCQ), Section B (Multiple Select Questions – MSQ), and Section C (Numerical Answer Type – NAT). Negative marking will only be applicable to Section A.

Application Fees

The application fees for IIT JAM 2027 vary based on the candidate’s category and the number of test papers they opt for. The fee is non-refundable once paid.

Female candidates, as well as those belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories, are eligible for a reduced fee structure.
