The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) today, September 17, 2026, announced the opening and closing ranks for Round 5 of admissions to various premier engineering and technical institutions across India. This includes the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs).

The release of these ranks is a crucial step for candidates seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as it outlines the cutoffs for various courses and institutions for the current academic year. GFTIs, funded by the Government of India, offer a range of courses including engineering, MBA, and MCA, with their fee structures varying by course and college.

Admission Criteria for GFTIs

Admission to Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) is primarily based on national-level entrance examination scores. For undergraduate engineering courses, admission is determined by the candidate’s JEE Main score. This score serves as the fundamental criterion for entry into the diverse engineering programmes offered by these institutions.

For postgraduate admissions, different examinations are considered. M.Tech. admissions at GFTIs require a valid GATE score, while MBA admissions are based on the CAT score of the candidates. These institutions also include universities and architecture colleges, broadening the scope of technical education available under the GFTI umbrella.

Overview of GFTI Institutions and Seat Availability

GFTIs comprise many institutions across India, each offering varying numbers of seats for prospective students. For instance, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, has a substantial capacity with 1029 seats, making it one of the larger GFTIs looking at intake. In contrast, institutions like the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, Bhadohi, offer a more specialized focus with 33 seats, and the Central Institute of Technology Kokrajhar, Assam, has 20 seats.

Other institutions such as Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar, has 460 seats, and the Institute of Technology, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, has 500 seats. The University of Hyderabad has 30 seats, while Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, has 703 seats. This diverse distribution of seats across various GFTIs caters to a broad spectrum of academic interests and geographical preferences among students.

NIRF Rankings for Select GFTIs

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) provides a full evaluation of educational institutions in India. In the 2021 NIRF rankings, the University of Hyderabad achieved a notable 17th rank in the overall category and an impressive 9th rank in the university category. Assam University also featured in the rankings, securing the 93rd position in the university category in 2021.

However, it is observed that many GFTI colleges were not ranked in the NIRF 2021 framework. For example, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, was ranked 107, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal, Punjab, was ranked 132, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, Jammu & Kashmir, was ranked 190. This indicates varying levels of participation and recognition within the national ranking system among these government-funded institutions.
