Renu Hans, a 45-year-old speech- and hearing-impaired Kashmiri Pandit woman, successfully cleared her Class 10 examination through the Jammu and Kashmir Open School (JKOS), achieving an 82 per cent score. The results for the bi-annual Class 10 board examination, which she appeared for in April, were declared on September 10, 2026.

Residing in a government flat in Lower Roop Nagar, on the outskirts of Jammu, Hans pursued her long-held dream of completing her education. Her family had migrated from the Kashmir valley in the early 1990s.

Journey to Class 10 Success

Renu Hans had previously attempted the Class 10 exam before her marriage but was unable to clear it. Her son, Naman Koul, a Class 12 Science student, took the initiative to help his mother fulfill her educational aspirations. Naman Koul approached the Jammu Kashmir Open Schooling (JKOS) office to register his mother, initially facing a hurdle when informed that the enrollment scheme had been discontinued. However, the family managed to get Renu Hans registered after subsequent developments in the scheme.

Naman Koul balanced his own Class 12 Science studies with his mother’s Class 10 preparation. He scheduled his mother’s lessons in the evenings and assisted her with doubts at night. Naman Koul stated, “I felt that my mother should not be confined to the house. If she studies, she can move forward in life. She always dreamt of studying and getting a good job. She had been carrying this dream for a very long time, and completing Class 10 was the first step towards fulfilling that dream.”

Family Support and Background

Renu Hans’s husband, Bablu Koul, who is also speech and hearing impaired, supported her decision to pursue education. Bablu Koul earns a livelihood through tailoring from home. Naman Koul mentioned his father’s encouragement, stating, “My father gave her his full support. There was no anger or objection from his side. He told her that even if she wanted to work, he would stand by her. She should not be afraid and should always remain confident.”

The family had vacated their ancestral home in Chawalgam village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district during the mass migration of the Kashmiri Pandit community in the early 1990s. Renu Hans, who also has a keen interest in painting, initially felt some apprehension about returning to studies. Naman Koul observed, “She was a little scared and anxious because there were students much younger than her, as well as older candidates, including elderly people. But with time, she settled down and became comfortable.”
