Maharashtra Law Admissions 2026: CET Cell Extends CAP Round 1 Choice Filling to August 11 Following Critical Rule Revisions

In a major development for tens of thousands of legal education aspirants across Maharashtra, the State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has officially extended the deadline for filling and submitting the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) Round 1 Option Form for both 3-Year and 5-Year LL.B. programmes. Candidates now have until Tuesday, August 11, 2026, to finalize, edit, and lock their college preference lists on the official portals.

The deadline extension—pushed back from the initial cut-off date of August 9—comes alongside substantial modifications to admission rules, most notably the elimination of the auto-freeze system for top preference choices. The move follows a last-minute influx of nearly 100 newly approved law colleges into the central admission pool, including premier institutions whose affiliation clearances were previously delayed.

Why the Deadline Was Extended: Addition of 98 Law Colleges

The primary catalyst for extending the CAP Round 1 timeline is the sudden expansion of participating institutions. According to an official public notice (No. HED-1126/CR. No. 25/CAP Reg 2026/1932/2026) issued by the Commissioner and Competent Authority of the State CET Cell, several law colleges were in the final stages of securing statutory approvals from the Bar Council of India (BCI) and university affiliations when choice filling originally commenced on August 5.

Rather than excluding these institutions from the initial allotment round—which would have created massive seat imbalances and administrative friction in later rounds—the CET Cell chose to grant a two-day extension. This decision allows newly accredited colleges to be integrated directly into the Round 1 choice matrix.

Between August 5 and August 8, a total of 98 law colleges were added across both streams, expanding the state’s total pool of participating law colleges to 247 institutions:

• 3-Year LL.B. Programme: Participating colleges increased from 93 to 146 (an addition of 53 colleges).

• 5-Year LL.B. Programme: Participating colleges increased from 56 to 101 (an addition of 45 colleges).

Most notably, prestigious institutions such as the historic Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai, alongside several prominent regional law colleges, have been formally integrated back into the active preference list following their final clearance updates.

The Major CAP Rule Overhaul: Elimination of ‘Auto-Freeze’

Beyond extending the registration window, the CET Cell introduced a structural reform to the CAP rules to prevent high-merit candidates from being trapped by shifting college availability.

The Core Problem

Under conventional CAP protocols, if a candidate is allotted their First Preference (Option 1) during Round 1, the system triggers an “Auto-Freeze.” This automatically locks the allotment, obligating the student to accept the seat and effectively exiting them from participating in subsequent betterment rounds.

The Solution

To eliminate this risk, the State CET Cell has discontinued the mandatory auto-freeze mechanism for the initial counseling rounds.

• Betterment Flexibility Reinstated: Candidates who secure their First Preference in Round 1 are no longer forced into a lock-in. Instead, they retain the option to elect “Betterment” for subsequent rounds by paying a seat acceptance fee of ₹1,000.

• Strategic Upgradation: This modification ensures that top rankers can hold a provisional seat while remaining eligible to compete for premier institutions that are integrated during subsequent CAP rounds.

• Voluntary Freeze: Candidates who are genuinely satisfied with their Round 1 seat allocation may still manually choose the “Freeze” option to confirm their seat and finalize admission.

Educational consultants and CET authorities strongly advise all candidates—including those who have already locked their option forms—to log back into the admission portal prior to the August 11 deadline.

1. Log into the Specialized Portals:

   Access your candidate dashboard via llb3cap26.mahacet.org (for 3-Year LL.B.) or llb5cap26.mahacet.org (for 5-Year LL.B.).

2. Review the Expanded College Directory:

   Filter through the updated list of 247 approved law colleges. Pay close attention to newly reinstated government and aided colleges in major hubs like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

3. Unlock and Re-order Preferences:

   If you locked your choice list prior to August 8, click the “Unlock Option Form” button. Insert newly added high-priority colleges at the top of your list. Ensure you list options in strict order of true academic preference rather than safety.

4. Re-Lock and Save Acknowledgement:

   After updating your preference matrix, re-lock the form and download the updated PDF acknowledgement receipt for future verification. Unlocked forms that remain unsubmitted past 11:59 PM on August 11 will not be considered for Round 1 allotment.
