MGU PG admissions 2026-27: new prospectus released, apply through CAP

Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has released the prospectus for admission to Post Graduate Degree Programmes (MGU-CSS) and B.LiSc Ed in its affiliated colleges for the academic year 2026-27. The admissions will be conducted through the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP), which was introduced by the university in 2010 to speed up procedures and enhance transparency.

Prospective candidates are advised to review the current prospectus thoroughly, as any prospectuses issued in previous years are not valid for the 2026 admissions. The university, established on 2 October 1983, has jurisdiction over Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts, encompassing 264 affiliated colleges.

Centralised Allotment Process and Seat Distribution

The Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) was implemented by Mahatma Gandhi University in 2010 to address issues such as unfilled seats and to ensure a transparent and equitable admission system for Post Graduate Programmes. The process covers admissions to affiliated colleges in Kottayam, aiming to democratise the admission procedure and uphold social justice. Candidates are required to visit the official website of the University, www.mgu.ac.in, for notifications and announcements regarding the admission process.

Seats in Government, Aided, and Self-financing affiliated colleges, as well as Self-financing programmes in Aided Colleges (excluding autonomous colleges), are categorised into Merit seats, Community merit seats (applicable only in aided colleges), and Management seats. Government Colleges offer all available seats, except those reserved under sports, cultural, or Persons with Disabilities (PD) quotas. Aided Colleges allocate 50% of seats as Open quota in aided/aided forward community colleges and 40% in aided backward community colleges, with 15% for SC and 5% for ST candidates. Additionally, Community Merit Quota seats account for 10% in aided/aided forward community colleges and 20% in aided backward community colleges. Unaided Colleges and Unaided programmes in Aided Colleges reserve 50% of their total seats, including those for SC/ST/SEBC categories. The remaining management quota seats in Aided and Unaided Colleges, and Unaided Programmes in Aided Colleges, are filled directly by the respective colleges.

Special Reservations and Eligibility

Mahatma Gandhi University has provisions for various special reservations, ensuring broader access to its Post Graduate programmes. An additional 10% of seats, over and above the sanctioned strength, are reserved for international students in each undergraduate programme. These students can apply either independently or through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). International students, excluding those under a Government of India sponsored scheme, must submit their applications online via www.ucica.mgu.ac.in and pay a US$ 100 application fee.

Further reservations include an additional seat in affiliated Arts and Science colleges for students sponsored by the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, and another additional seat for Malayalee students from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Differently abled candidates are allocated 5% of seats over and above the sanctioned strength in all affiliated institutions, requiring only a pass in the qualifying examination for PG admissions. Two additional seats are created for transgender candidates and two for orphan children (one male, one female) in all courses in affiliated Arts & Science Colleges. An additional seat is also reserved for children from Government Children’s Homes and institutions under the Juvenile Justice Act in affiliated Aided/Government Arts and Science colleges. The PM Cares for Children Scheme provides 5 additional seats for children who lost both parents due to Covid-19. Special reservations also include Sports Quota and Cultural Quota, with an upper age limit of 25 years for sports quota applicants. For M.A., M.Sc., and M.Com programmes, one seat is reserved for every 20 seats under the Sports Quota, with interchangeability permitted. Candidates seeking admission under Sports Quota should apply online under the non-CAP category, but can also apply in CAP for general allotment consideration.

Admission to Assumption College (Autonomous)

Assumption College (Autonomous), Changanassery, an affiliated college of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, also follows a specific admission process for its Post Graduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic year. The college, granted Autonomous Status by the UGC in 2016 and accredited with an A+ grade by NAAC, has a current strength of nearly 1800 students across 19 Undergraduate, 9 Postgraduate, and 2 Ph.D. programmes. It was ranked 47th nationally and 11th in the State among private autonomous colleges in the Education World-India Higher Education Rankings 2024-25.

Online registration is compulsory for all applicants to Assumption College. The registration fee for the General Category is Rs. 300/-, while for SC/ST candidates, it is Rs. 150/-. Similar to MGU, the prospectus issued in previous years is not valid for 2026 admissions at Assumption College. Candidates are advised to visit the college’s official website, www.assumptioncollege.edu.in, for notifications and announcements. Registration for PG courses for the academic year 2026-27 must be completed online by the stipulated deadline in the admission schedule.
