SAIL MT recruitment through GATE 2026: eligibility, selection process detailed

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is set to conduct its Management Trainee (MT) recruitment through the GATE 2026 examination. This recruitment drive aims to fill MT posts across eight engineering disciplines, with the application process and specific vacancy details to be announced.

Eligibility and Application Details

Candidates applying for the SAIL Management Trainee positions must be qualified in GATE 2026. A graduation or above degree from one of eight specified engineering disciplines is required: Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumental, Mechanical, and Metallurgical. General, EWS, and OBC (NCL) candidates need a minimum of 65% marks in their graduation, while SC, ST, and PwBD candidates require 55%.

The maximum age limit for General category candidates is 28 years. Age relaxation provisions include 3 years for OBC candidates, 5 years for SC/ST candidates, and 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). Selection Process and Medical Standards

The selection process for SAIL Management Trainees involves multiple stages. Candidates will first be shortlisted based on their GATE examination marks. This is followed by a Group Discussion (GD), a Group Task (GT), and a Personal Interview. For the 2024 recruitment cycle, the GATE score carried a 75% weightage, Group Discussion 10%, and the Interview 15%.

All shortlisted candidates must undergo a Pre-Employment Medical Examination. Specific medical standards include a sound physique with no physical defects, a minimum weight of 45kg, and a minimum height of 155cm. Ocular requirements state that myopia and hypermetropia must not exceed ± 4.00 in each eye, and no squint or color blindness, partial or full, is allowed. Only orthopedically disabled candidates with OA or OL disability and a minimum of 40% disability are eligible to apply.

Remuneration and Previous Recruitment Context

During the apprenticeship period, selected Management Trainees will receive a salary of Rs. 60,000.00 per month. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, the pay scale will be Rs. 50,000 – 1,60,000, on top of applicable allowances.

SAIL has a history of recruiting Management Trainees through GATE scores, with previous drives in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2024. The number of vacancies and application dates have varied across these cycles. For instance, the 2019 recruitment initially advertised 142 posts, which were later revised to 399, while the 2024 recruitment aimed to fill 249 posts.
