WBSSC Class 11-12 teacher recruitment: fresh interview list out after OBC quota change

The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) today, September 29, 2026, published a fresh list of candidates eligible for interviews for Class 11-12 teacher recruitment. The revised list, available on the official website old.westbengalssc.com, follows significant changes in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation structure and broader legal and administrative developments.

This updated eligibility framework is a direct consequence of revised OBC reservation norms and a change in the state government in 2026. The recruitment process, which aims to fill 12,445 vacancies for Assistant Teachers for Classes XI-XII, has been subject to multiple delays and judicial interventions.

Changes in OBC Reservation and Vacancy Allocation

The fresh interview eligibility list was prepared after applying updated reservation norms, which included a reduction in the OBC reservation quota from 17 per cent to 7 per cent. This change also involved replacing the earlier two-category OBC system (OBC-A and OBC-B) with a single OBC category. These revisions have led to changes in the subject-wise allocation of vacancies, though the overall number of vacancies for recruitment remains unchanged at 12,445.

The change in the state government in 2026 contributed to the revision of the reservation framework. The WBSSC has clarified that candidates who have already completed their interviews are not required to appear again solely due to the revised reservation structure.

Recruitment Stages and Ongoing Process

While the interview list has been updated, various stages of the recruitment process are already underway. Counselling has been completed for 21 of the 33 subjects at the higher secondary level. Candidates who completed the relevant stages have received recommendation letters, and police verification has been completed for some. However, appointment letters have not yet been issued to candidates.

Last month, WBSSC chairman Dushant Naraala stated that the commission was seeking legal advice to ensure transparency in the ongoing process. The recruitment process involves a weightage system for various parameters, including educational qualification, experience score, OMR examination, and interview cum lecture demonstration.

Background and Supreme Court Interventions

The current recruitment process traces its background to the 2016 recruitment exercise, which was cancelled by the Supreme Court on April 3, 2025. The Supreme Court described the recruitment panel as ‘tainted and vitiated’, a decision that affected around 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff. Following this, a fresh recruitment examination for teachers for Classes 11 and 12 was conducted in September 2025, with examination results announced later that year.

The Supreme Court initially permitted eligible teachers from the cancelled 2016 exercise to remain in service and receive salaries until December 31, 2025. The deadline for completing the fresh recruitment was subsequently extended to August 31, 2026. The West Bengal government approached the Supreme Court again for a further extension, which was granted, extending the deadline for completing the recruitment process until May 31, 2027.

Cut-Off Marks for Interview Cum Lecture Demonstration

The WBSSC has also published cut-off marks for the interview cum lecture demonstration for various categories and subjects. For instance, the cut-off for Accountancy (PG) Bengali, Male/Female, General Category, is 34 marks, while for Female, General Category, it is 25 marks. For the SC Category, Male/Female, the cut-off is 28 marks.
