IIT Delhi NIRF ranking 2026 awaited today, previous trends available

The rankings are typically released by NIRF between June and September each year.

IIT Delhi’s Performance in Previous NIRF Rankings

IIT Delhi has consistently been ranked under multiple categories in previous NIRF assessments. In the NIRF Ranking 2025, the institute secured the 2nd position in the ‘Engineering’ category, a position it has maintained since 2023. Its flagship BTech course is widely recognized.

However, an analysis of ranking trends from 2023 to 2025 reveals some shifts. While the ‘Engineering’ and ‘Research Institutions’ ranks remained consistent, the ‘Overall’ rank for IIT Delhi saw a drop from 3 in 2023 to 4 in 2025. Conversely, the ‘Management’ rank improved from 5 in 2023 to 4 in 2025.

NIRF Ranking Methodology and Factors

The NIRF rankings are based on a detailed set of parameters, each assigned a specific weightage. These factors aim to provide a complete assessment of an educational institution’s quality and performance. The five key factors considered are Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach & Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR).

Teaching, Learning & Resources and Research and Professional Practice each carry a significant 30% weightage, highlighting the importance of academic delivery and research output. Graduation Outcome accounts for 20%, while Outreach & Inclusivity and Perception each contribute 10% to the overall score. This methodology allows for a detailed comparison of universities at a national level.

Context of Delhi as a National Capital Territory

IIT Delhi is situated in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, a significant educational and economic hub. Delhi became a union territory on November 1, 1956, and was designated the National Capital Territory in 1995. The NCT covers an area of 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi).

New Delhi, which became the capital of the British Indian Empire on December 12, 1911, continued as the capital of the Dominion of India after independence in 1947 and after that as the capital of the Republic of India after 1950. The current Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and the Chief Minister is Rekha Gupta (BJP).
