IIT JAM 2027 registration extended: apply by October 19

IIT Kharagpur, the organizing institute for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2027, has extended the registration deadline for the examination. Aspiring candidates for postgraduate science and related programmes now have until October 19, 2026, to submit their applications online through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) portal.

The extension provides additional time for eligible students to apply for the JAM 2027 examination, which serves as an entrance test for admission to various postgraduate programmes across 23 participating Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other institutes. The examination offers access to over 3,000 seats across 89 programmes.

Key Dates for JAM 2027

The registration window for JAM 2027 initially opened on September 5, 2026. With the extension, candidates now have until October 19, 2026, to complete their applications. The JAM 2027 examination is scheduled to be held on February 14, 2027, and the results are slated for announcement on March 18, 2027.

The examination will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Candidates can appear for one or two test papers, subject to session-wise paper combination. The information brochure for JAM 2027 was released on August 31, 2026.

Eligibility and Application Fees

Students who have completed their undergraduate degree or are in their final year are eligible to apply for JAM 2027. There is no age limit for appearing in the examination, nor is there any restriction on the number of attempts. The application fees vary based on the candidate’s category and the number of test papers they opt for.

For Female, SC, ST, or PwD candidates, the application fee for one test paper is ₹1,000, while for two test papers it is ₹1,350. All other candidates are required to pay ₹2,000 for one test paper and ₹2,700 for two test papers. The application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Examination Structure and Subjects

The JAM 2027 examination will be held in two sessions on February 14, 2027. The forenoon session, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, will include test papers for Chemistry, Geology, and Mathematics. The afternoon session, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, will cover Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics, and Physics. Each test paper has a duration of three hours.

Each test paper will contain 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The question paper is divided into three compulsory sections: Section A (Multiple Choice Questions – MCQ), Section B (Multiple Select Questions – MSQ), and Section C (Numerical Answer Type – NAT). Negative marking is applicable only to Section A (MCQ). A virtual calculator will be available on screen during the examination.

Application Process and Required Documents

Candidates for IIT JAM 2027 must submit their applications online through the official JAM portal, jam.iitkgp.ac.in, by the extended deadline of October 19, 2026. The application process is supported via the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS). Before initiating the application, prospective candidates are advised to have a valid email ID, mobile number, personal and academic details, preferred test paper(s), and examination cities readily available.

Required documents for the application include a recent passport-size colour photograph, a scanned signature, a Class 10/SSC certificate, and, if applicable, a category certificate and a PwD certificate. A valid payment method is also necessary for the non-refundable and non-transferable application fee. The fee structure varies by category and the number of test papers chosen: Female, SC, ST, or PwD candidates pay ₹1,000 for one test paper or ₹1,350 for two, while all other candidates pay ₹2,000 for one test paper or ₹2,700 for two.
