JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility criteria expected in December: what changes for aspirants

These guidelines, crucial for aspirants seeking admission to the prestigious IITs, will cover aspects such as JEE Main scores, age limits, number of attempts, and Class 12 appearance year.

While the official criteria for JEE Advanced 2027 are yet to be published, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) typically maintains consistent eligibility norms year-on-year, making the JEE Advanced 2026 criteria a reliable reference. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the JEE Main 2027 exam twice, in January and April 2027, serving as the gateway to JEE Advanced.

JEE Main 2027 Qualification and Age Limits

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027, candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates across all categories in the BE/BTech Paper of JEE Main 2027. The JEE Main exam itself has no age limit, and allows for six total attempts over three consecutive years. However, specific age criteria apply for JEE Advanced.

For JEE Advanced 2027, students born on or after October 1, 2002, are generally eligible. A five-year age relaxation is provided for SC, ST, and PwD students, making those born on or after October 1, 1997, eligible. Attempts and Class 12 Appearance Criteria

A candidate can appear for JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. This means that if a student first attempted JEE Advanced in 2026, their second and final attempt would be in 2027. Those who attempted in 2025 and 2026 are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027.

Regarding Class 12 qualification, candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 or equivalent examination for the first time either in 2026 or 2027, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Students who appeared for their Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2025 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. Previous IIT Admission and Class 12 Marks

Candidates who have previously been admitted to an IIT are generally not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027, regardless of whether they continued in the program or accepted an IIT seat. This also applies to candidates whose admission to IITs was cancelled after joining. However, there is an exception for candidates admitted to a preparatory course in any IIT for the first time in 2026; they can appear in JEE Advanced 2027.

In addition, candidates who were allocated a seat in an IIT through JoSAA 2026 but did not report, withdrew before the last round, or had their seat cancelled before the last round are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced 2027. For final admission to an IIT, General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates require a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or must rank within the Top 20 percentile of their respective board. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the requirement is a minimum of 65% aggregate marks in Class 12 or a rank within the Top 20 percentile of their board. The aggregate percentage is calculated using marks from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Language (higher-scoring), and the highest-scoring fifth subject.
