JEE Advanced 2027 attempts: eligibility criteria for IIT admissions

The Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced (JEE–Advanced) is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination, held annually for admissions to 23 IITs, IISc, IIPE, RGIPT, IIST, and IMU-KC. In 2026, 1,79,694 candidates appeared for both papers of JEE Advanced, with 56,880 candidates qualifying for admissions.

JEE Advanced 2027 Attempt Limits and Qualifying Examination

Candidates are permitted to attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. For JEE Advanced 2027, candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination for the first time in either 2026 or 2027. This criterion ensures that only recent school leavers are eligible for the examination.

In addition, eligibility for JEE Advanced 2027 requires candidates to be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates across all categories in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main 2027. JEE Main 2027 is expected to be conducted in two sessions, in January 2027 and April 2027. Eligible candidates can appear for JEE Main across three consecutive years based on their Class 12 qualifying year.

Age and Academic Requirements for JEE Advanced 2027

The expected baseline birth date requirement for JEE Advanced 2027 is October 1, 2002. However, SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a 5-year age relaxation, setting their birth date cutoff at October 1, 1997. This age criterion is a standard component of the eligibility framework for the examination.

Academic performance in Class 12 is also a key factor. General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates are required to have a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12, or rank within the Top 20 percentile of their respective boards. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the minimum aggregate marks required in Class 12 is 65%, or ranking within the Top 20 percentile of their board. The 75% aggregate is calculated using marks from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language, and the highest-scoring fifth subject.

Reservation Policies and Previous IIT Admissions

OBC-NCL candidates benefit from a 27% reservation in seat allocation for JEE Main. In addition, a 5% horizontal reservation is applied for PwD candidates within each category. These reservation policies are consistent with established government guidelines for admissions to higher education institutions.

Candidates who have previously accepted an IIT seat through JoSAA are generally not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. An exception applies if they withdrew their acceptance before the final seat allocation round. This rule aims to prevent candidates from occupying seats they do not intend to take up, ensuring fair opportunities for other aspirants.

Examination Structure and Fee Details

The JEE Advanced examination consists of two papers, each of three hours duration, totaling six hours of examination time on a single day. IIT Delhi is expected to conduct JEE Advanced 2027, with the examination anticipated to be held in May 2027.

Based on 2024 figures, the fee for Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO card holders (issued before 04-03-2021), Female Candidates (all categories), SC, ST, and PwD Candidates was ₹ 1600. For all other Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO card holders (issued before 04-03-2021), the fee was ₹ 3200. Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO card holders (issued on or after 04-03-2021) residing in SAARC Countries were charged USD 100, while those residing in Non-SAARC Countries paid USD 200.
