NMC Approves 275 More Government MBBS Seats in AP, Goa & Jammu for 2026-27
If you are currently preparing for the NEET UG counselling process, we have some incredible news for you. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially approved 275 additional MBBS seats across government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh (AP), Goa, and Jammu and Kashmir.
These newly sanctioned seats will be available starting from the 2026-27 academic session, expanding undergraduate medical education capacity and giving a significant boost to medical aspirants across these regions.
This latest update comes as a major relief. With competition hitting record highs, more government seats mean a higher chance of securing an affordable, high-quality medical education without having to look at expensive private colleges.
Let’s break down exactly where these 275 new seats have been added so you can update your counselling preference list accordingly.
State-Wise Breakdown of the New MBBS Seats
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under the NMC issued the official Letters of Permission (LoPs) after evaluating the infrastructure, teaching standards, and clinical facilities at these colleges.
1. Andhra Pradesh (175 New Seats)
Andhra Pradesh is the biggest beneficiary in this round of approvals, gaining 175 additional MBBS seats across two government institutions:
-
Piduguralla Government Medical College: This newly established government medical college has received approval to start its very first batch with 100 seats.
-
Siddhartha Government Medical College, Vijayawada: One of the state’s well-known and highly preferred colleges has been sanctioned 75 additional seats.
Note for AP Aspirants: State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav highlighted that this is part of a larger push to expand medical education. Earlier, the NMC had also approved 75 additional seats for Kadapa Government Medical College and 25 seats for Nellore Government Medical College. In total, Andhra Pradesh has added 325 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year.
2. Goa (50 New Seats)
-
Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim: The premier government institution in Goa has received approval to increase its annual MBBS intake by 50 seats.
This raises GMC’s total annual capacity from 200 to 250 seats starting this academic session. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane welcomed this development as a significant milestone that will strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.
3. Jammu and Kashmir (50 New Seats)
-
Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu: The NMC has officially approved 50 additional seats for GMC Jammu.
This increases the college’s total intake capacity from 200 to 250 seats.
Note for J&K Aspirants: This news comes right on the heels of another major announcement, where GMC Srinagar also received approval for an additional 50 seats (raising its total capacity to 250 as well).

What This Means for NEET UG Candidates
An increase in government MBBS seats is always a massive win for students. Here is why this latest update matters to you:
-
Relaxed Cut-offs: Adding 275 government seats across these regions means the closing ranks or cut-offs during state quota counselling might drop slightly, giving students with borderline scores a better shot at a government seat.
-
More All-India Quota (AIQ) Seats: Since 15% of government college seats go to the All-India Quota, this expansion will also add more options for out-of-state candidates trying their luck through MCC counselling.
-
Affordable Education: More government seats mean fewer students will have to settle for expensive private colleges or look for options abroad.
With NEET UG counselling set to begin soon, make sure to keep these newly approved seats in mind while preparing your college preference lists. Good luck with your medical journey!
