TNEA 2026 Round 1 Choice Filling Closes Today at tneaonline.org; Tentative Allotment Scheduled for July 24
The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu, is set to close the Round 1 choice filling window for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 today, July 22, 2026. Candidates who are participating in the first round of general counselling must finalize and lock their college and course preferences on the official website, tneaonline.org, before 5:00 PM.
This crucial step marks the formal beginning of seat allocation for thousands of engineering aspirants across Tamil Nadu. Following the completion of the choice filling process today, DoTE will release the tentative seat allotment result on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Who is Eligible for Round 1?
Round 1 of TNEA 2026 general counselling covers candidates holding overall ranks from 1 to 37,976. These candidates have aggregate Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) ranging between 200 and 171.333.
Because top rank holders are included in this round, competition is fierce for premier institutions such as College of Engineering Guindy (CEG), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), SSN College of Engineering, and premier government-aided campuses.
Candidates who fall outside this rank range will participate in subsequent counselling rounds scheduled throughout August 2026.
Why Today’s Choice Filling Deadline Matters
During the choice filling window, candidates can add up to 100 college and branch combinations to their personalized preference list. The arrangement of these choices is critical because the TNEA automated allotment algorithm processes candidates strictly by merit rank and scans their list from top to bottom.
Education experts advise candidates to follow a balanced structure when arranging their choices:
-
Top Options (Aspirational): Highly competitive colleges and branches that match dream goals.
-
Middle Options (Realistic): Colleges where previous years’ cutoff scores match the candidate’s exact rank.
-
Lower Options (Safe Backups): Reliable choices that ensure the candidate receives a seat allocation rather than leaving the round empty-handed.
If candidates do not lock their choices manually before the 5:00 PM deadline today, the TNEA system will automatically lock whatever preferences were saved last in the portal. However, experts strongly recommend logging in, double-checking the preference order, and clicking “Lock Choices” manually to generate an official confirmation document for future reference.
What Happens on July 24? Tentative Allotment Explained
Once the choice filling portal closes, DoTE will run its seat allocation algorithm to match student preferences, merit ranks, and community reservation categories. On July 24, 2026, the tentative seat allotment result will be published under individual candidate logins on tneaonline.org.
The tentative allotment is a preliminary seat assignment. It shows candidates which college and branch they have been provisionally assigned based on their rank and choices. Candidates will then have a strict two-day confirmation window—from July 24 to July 25, 2026—to respond to the allotment offer.
Understanding Your Seat Confirmation Options
When the tentative allotment is declared on July 24, candidates must log into the portal and select one of the following decision paths:
-
Accept and Join: The candidate is satisfied with the seat and accepts it. They will receive a provisional allotment order to report to the college.
-
Accept and Upward: The candidate accepts the currently allotted seat but requests to be considered for a higher-preference option if a seat opens up in subsequent seat shuffling.
-
Decline and Upward: The candidate rejects the currently assigned seat but wishes to wait for a higher option on their choice list.
-
Decline and Move to Next Round: The candidate rejects the current offer and chooses to participate in the next round of counselling.
-
Decline and Quit: The candidate rejects the offer and exits the TNEA counselling process completely.
Warning: Failing to confirm your response within the July 24–25 confirmation window will result in the automatic cancellation of the tentative allotment.
Final Provisional Allotment and College Reporting
After the confirmation window closes, DoTE will release the final Provisional Allotment Order on July 26, 2026. Candidates who accept their seats must download this order, pay the initial admission fee, and report to their allotted college between July 26 and July 30, 2026, to complete document verification and formal admission.
For candidates in lower rank brackets, Round 2 choice filling (Ranks 37,977 to 1,31,093) will open on August 3, 2026, followed by Round 3 later in the month.
