MBBS 2026: Agartala Government Medical College adds 100 seats, total now 250

Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has increased its MBBS seats from 150 to 250 for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session, an expansion of 100 seats. This development was approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and announced by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The increase aims to bolster Tripura’s medical education framework and healthcare delivery systems, providing more opportunities for aspiring medical students and enhancing the availability of specialised healthcare services in the region. With this expansion, AGMC, the only government-run medical college in Tripura, now has an intake capacity comparable to institutions such as Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi and B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, which also have a maximum of 250 MBBS seats.

Impact on Medical Education and Healthcare in Tripura

The expansion of MBBS seats at AGMC is expected to significantly strengthen the state’s medical education infrastructure. Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that the move is envisioned to contribute to a healthier and more prosperous future for Tripura, adding that a stronger medical education system today will build a healthier Tripura tomorrow. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their support in this initiative.

GBP Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Kanak Chawdhury confirmed that a team had been working to secure NMC’s approval for the additional seats. Dr Chawdhury also noted that approximately 25 new faculty members are in the process of being appointed for the project, and necessary infrastructure is being developed to accommodate the increased number of medical students. The government fees for the MBBS course at AGMC are ₹36,000 per year, with the course duration being 4.5 years plus one year of compulsory rotating medical internship.

Broader Developments in Tripura’s Medical Sector

Beyond the expansion at AGMC, the Tripura government is pursuing several other initiatives to enhance medical education and healthcare. A new private medical college with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS students is planned for the Dhalai district, with the Bandhan Bank management having recently laid its foundation stone at Ambassa. In addition, the state government has established a dental college in Agartala and has decided to establish a full-fledged medical university. This university will oversee the three medical colleges, nursing colleges, and paramedical institutions within the state.

Currently, the total number of MBBS seats across Tripura’s three medical colleges, including Tripura Medical College and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (each with 150 seats), will now be 500. This compares to 1,975 MBBS seats in Assam, 550 in Manipur, 250 in Meghalaya, 200 in Sikkim, and 100 each in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for Agartala Government Medical College in 2005.
