GATE 2027 Registration Dates Revised from 27 Aug to 27 September: Check New Rules, Revised Dates & More
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially revised the registration schedule for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The application window will now open on August 27, 2026, on the official portal, gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The last date to complete the registration without a late fee will be September 27, 2026, with an extended registration period available until October 5, 2026, for those applying with a late fee.
Originally, the GATE 2027 registration was supposed to begin today 14 August – 21 September 2026. Alongside the revised dates, IIT Madras has also introduced several structural changes to GATE 2027, including a new test paper and syllabus revisions across various disciplines.

GATE 2027: Revised Registration and Key Dates
IIT Madras has confirmed that the online application process for GATE 2027 will commence on August 27, 2026, accessible through the GOAPS portal on the official website. The initial deadline for submitting applications without a late fee is September 27, 2026. Candidates who miss this deadline will have an additional window to register with a late fee until October 5, 2026.

Structural Changes and New Initiatives for GATE 2027
IIT Madras has introduced several key changes to GATE 2027, including a new paper, revised syllabi and changes to sectional paper codes.
- New Robotics and Automation paper: A new Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper has been introduced, taking the total number of GATE 2027 test papers to 30.
- Syllabus revision: The syllabi for the GATE 2027 test papers have been revised, with IIT Madras advising candidates to refer to the updated syllabi. The revision comes after about five years.
- Textile Engineering reclassification: Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) will no longer be a standalone paper. It will be offered as XE9: Textile Engineering & Fibre Science, a section under the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper.
- Changes in sectional paper codes: IIT Madras has also revised the paper codes for the XE, XH and XL sectional papers.
- DigiLocker-based registration: Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals. Candidates are required to have a verified DigiLocker account, from which details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, photograph, address and verified ID details can be fetched.
- More exam-city choices: Candidates will be able to select six examination cities instead of three, with the choices required to be from a single zone.
GATE 2027 Application Fee Structure
The application fee for GATE 2027 has been specified by IIT Madras. Female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates are required to pay a fee of ₹1,000 per paper. For all other categories of candidates, the application fee is ₹2,000 per paper. These fees are applicable during the initial registration period without a late fee. Candidates registering during the extended window with a late fee will incur additional charges.
