Strict adherence to these specifications is crucial to avoid application rejection, as outlined by authorities such as the National Testing Agency (NTA), National Law University (NLU) Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

These detailed instructions encompass file formats, sizes, background requirements, and even specific signing methods, reflecting a growing emphasis on digital verification and authentication. Recent changes, including the introduction of live photo capture for UPSC CSE 2026 and IIT Madras’s live facial verification for GATE 2027, underscore the need for candidates to be fully prepared before initiating their online applications.

UPSC Cse 2026: Photo and Signature Specifications

For the UPSC CSE 2026 examination, candidates must ensure their photographs are in JPG format, with a file size ranging between 20KB and 200KB. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) explicitly states that the photograph file must be saved with the filename ‘photo’. Signatures for UPSC CSE 2026 must also be in JPG format, with a file size between 20KB and 100KB, and pixel dimensions between 350-500 pixels. The signature must be executed in black ink only, on a plain white background. A unique requirement from UPSC mandates candidates to sign their signature three times vertically on a plain white sheet using a black ink pen, scanning all three signatures together into a single image file. In addition, UPSC has introduced a mandatory live photo capture option for the 2026 examination application form, as per the UPSC Photo and Signature Guidelines 2026.

JEE Main 2027: Document Upload Guidelines

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has specified detailed requirements for JEE Main 2027. Photographs must be a recent passport-sized colour photograph, in JPG or JPEG format, with a file size between 10 KB and 200 KB. Key visual criteria include a plain white or off-white background, 80% face coverage with both ears visible, a neutral expression, no glasses, and no headgear except for religious reasons. Signatures for JEE Main 2027 must be in JPG or JPEG format, with a file size between 10 KB and 100 KB. The signature must be handwritten in black ink on white paper only, clear and continuous, with no overwriting. for JEE Main 2026, applicants were required to upload a live photograph, and the maximum size for a passport-size photo was decreased from 300 KB to 200 KB, while the signature file size increased from 50 KB to 100 KB.

For the AILET 2027 examination, conducted by the National Law University (NLU) Delhi, photographs must be passport-size coloured images with a white background. Signatures for AILET 2027 must be scanned on white paper, placed within a 6 × 3 cm box, and executed using a black or blue pen. The signature should be clear and without overwriting, with a maximum file size of 1 MB, and in JPG, JPEG, or PNG format, as per the AILET 2027 Photo Size & Signature guidelines.

GATE 2027: Registration and Document Details

IIT Madras is set to begin GATE 2027 registration on August 14, 2026. The deadline for submitting the application form without a late fee is September 21, 2026, with the final date for submissions with an extended fee being September 30, 2026. For GATE 2027, photographs should be a recent, coloured image measuring 3.5 cm in width and 4.5 cm in height. The candidate’s face must cover 60-70% of the photo, which requires a white background and must be in JPEG or JPG format. Signatures must be in black or dark blue ink, in JPEG or JPG format, and cover 70-80% of the designated area.
