The Department of Civil Engineering at University College of Engineering (UCE), Nagercoil, a constituent college of Anna University, Chennai, has announced a recruitment drive for one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position. The recruitment, notified on 20 September 2026, is for a research project funded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under its RESPOND Programme.

The selected candidate will work on a three-year project titled “Exploring rivers & paleo-channels using Remote sensing: For understanding Martian rivers,” which aims to enhance remote sensing techniques for studying terrestrial rivers and paleo-channels to interpret Martian river-like features, contributing to India’s planetary exploration research.

Eligibility and Application Process

Candidates applying for the Junior Research Fellow position must possess a First Class M.E./M.Tech in Engineering/Technology, or an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Geoinformatics Engineering, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geology, Applied Geology, Geography, or Computer Science Engineering, or an equivalent qualification. Alternatively, a Postgraduate Degree in Basic Science or a Graduate/Postgraduate in a Professional Course, selected through CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship/Assistant Professorship) or GATE, or a national-level examination conducted by a Central Government Department/Agency, is also considered eligible.

Desirable skills for the role include practical experience with QGIS/ArcGIS, GPS data acquisition and processing, Python programming, knowledge of Machine Learning (ML)/Deep Learning (DL) algorithms, and familiarity with modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. The Principal Investigator for this project, with ID RES-PRL-2025-002, is Dr. J. Colins Johnny, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at UCE Nagercoil. The age of the candidate will be calculated as on 31 August 2026.

Emoluments and Project Details

The Junior Research Fellow will receive monthly emoluments of Rs. 37,000, along with a 10% House Rent Allowance (HRA) of Rs. 3,700, for the first two years of the project. In the third year, subject to performance and as per Department of Science and Technology (DST) norms, the position will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF), with monthly emoluments of Rs. 42,000 plus 10% HRA.

The project has a duration of three years, and the place of work will be the Department of Civil Engineering at UCE Nagercoil. University College of Engineering Nagercoil, established in 2009 and funded by the Tamil Nadu State Government, offers research programmes leading to doctoral degrees across various disciplines including Civil, CSE, ECE, EEE, IT, Mechanical, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English.

On top of the postal submission, a scanned copy of the complete application must also be emailed to colinsjohnny@ucen.ac.in.
