UP Board exam schedule may change if assembly elections held in February

In short

  • UPMSP secretary Bhagwati Singh stated on October 14, 2026, that the 2027 UP Board exam schedule, set for February 5-24, may change if assembly elections are held in February.
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) will determine the election dates, with a March poll allowing the board to avoid rescheduling.
  • Over 50 lakh students appear for UP Board exams annually, which are conducted at 8,000 schools across Uttar Pradesh.
  • A large number of schools are used as polling centers and 150,000 to 200,000 teachers are deployed for election duties, necessitating schedule adjustments.
  • The five-year term of the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is scheduled to conclude on May 22, 2027.

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) secretary, Bhagwati Singh, stated on October 14, 2026, that the announced schedule for the 2027 UP Board examinations may be revised if assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are conducted in February. The board had previously announced on Monday that the Class 10 and 12 exams for 2027 would take place between February 5 and February 24.

This potential change is driven by the need to avoid conflicts with the assembly elections, as a good chunk of schools across the state are designated as polling centers, and a large contingent of teachers are deployed for election duties. More than 50 lakh students appear for UP Board exams annually, which are conducted at 8,000 centers (schools) statewide, requiring the deployment of 150,000 to 200,000 teachers and staff for examination duty.

Impact of Election Commission’s Decision on Exam Schedule

UPMSP secretary Bhagwati Singh clarified that the current examination schedule was prepared in accordance with the academic calendar, with the aim of maintaining a timely session for students’ academic careers. However, the final decision rests with the Election Commission of India (ECI), a Constitutional body responsible for determining election dates.

Singh stated, “The Election Commission of India is a Constitutional body. If it decides to hold polls in March, nothing will get disturbed. This will be the best scenario as the board will not have to reschedule the examinations. In case the ECI decides to conduct UP polls in February, the board in that case will be left with no options but to prepare a new examination schedule.” The five-year term of the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on May 22, 2027.

Historical Context of UP Board Exams and Assembly Polls

Past UP assembly elections have frequently influenced the board examination schedules. The last three UP assembly polls (2022, 2017, and 2012) commenced in the first week of February and concluded in the first week of March. In each of these years, the UP Board examinations were either conducted or rescheduled in March to accommodate the elections.

For instance, in 2022, UP Board Class 10 and 12 exams began on March 24, with Class 10 exams ending on April 11 and Class 12 exams concluding on April 20. The seven-phase UP assembly polls in 2022 were held from February 10 to March 7, during which approximately 2.6 lakh secondary school teachers were assigned poll duties. Similarly, in 2017, board examinations began on March 16, following assembly elections held from February 11 to March 8. The 2012 UP Board exam was postponed from its original March 1 schedule due to elections, eventually beginning on March 16 after polls were held from February 8 to March 3.
